HD9-U2LA LANDRIVE Lan Drive NAS storage device issues

I purchased a network attached storage device called a Lan Drive model
HD9-U2LA and I think it was from RJTech but the documentation indicates
it is a USBEX device (http://www.usbex.com/landrive)

The drive is either a network device or a USB device (not both at
once). It works, but I have a few issues.

First off, when you connect to it, it rarely shows you all the files
immediately uppon connecting. You have to wait a second or two and hit
F5 in Wondows to refresh the view and then it shows everything.

I would like to get newer firmware, but the site mentioned above seems
to have the firmware removed.

Has anybody else had any experience with this device and if so have
they found newer firmware or a way to prevent the initial view from
being incomplete?

Thanks.

That sounds very much like a problem with WIndows, not the device.

Firmware should only be updated if there is a real problem. Do you
have one?

The obvious way to check that is to boot knoppix from
a CD and see if you get the same effect with that.

Corse he does.

That sounds very much like a problem with WIndows, not the device.

I used to have a Windows 98 box as my "file server" and replaced that
with the Lan Drive. When I accessed the same files on the WIn98 server
there were no issuue like this from the same Windows machine (machines,
there are multiple int he house that access teh device and they all
exhibit the same issue)

I could test from Linux or from a Mac or from Knopix or whatever, but
thats not really the point. It has to work from Windows just like my
previous file server did from Windows. The device should not hand a
partial list of files to the Windows machine when asked for the list of
files. That is an issue.

As a followup, I had sent emails to the store I bought it from and no
reply. (www.canadacomputers.com) and I had sent emails to rjtech and
usbex and also got no replies. Recently mediasonic took over the line
here in Canada and I sent an email this morning and I got an email back
with a version 43 firmware file attached. (The most recent I had before
was a version 41)

So I will see what version 43 of the firmware does for the issue.

Problem Resolved. The version 43 firmware that Mediasonic supplied
seems to have resolved the issue.

Now when I connect to the device all the files and folders show up
first time every time.

Now I can say that I really like the device! I tolerated it before, now
I like it!

Two other asides.

It uses FAT32 for the file system. The limitation there is a 4GB
individual file size maximum. Thats not a huge limit for me so I am
fine with that.

There is documentation that indicates there is a 12 character file name
limit. I am certain that is a mistranslation from the manual writers
native language. There is a 12 character limit on the SHARE name that
the device advertises on the network, but the files inside that share
use normal WIndows file naming and are not limited to 12 characters.

As mentioned previously I think... the device has both USB ports and
the RJ45 ethernet 10/100 port on it. It can use used as a USB drive
enclosure or as a network attached storage device. It has ftp as well
and provisions for passwords. If you plug in a USB cable, the network
side becomes inactive. The really nice thing about the USB port is for
when you want to move LARGE amounts of data, USB 2.0 is way faster than
100 megabit ethernet.

That'd be a major problem for me.

Its should be gigabit ethernet.

Wouldnt be that viable for me, I'd rather have eSATA.

That site has a grerat repository of firmware.

Now that I have seen it, if you do a google search for
nas-basic44
or
nas-basic45
.... you should be able to come up with lots of sites that have the
firmware...

thanks all for the followups. Version 43 is working for me but 44 looks
to have a LOT of fixes in it. I will upgrade. As soon 45 has been
around and stable for a while I may go further.
