Having the TOC retain a format

F

Faraz A. Qureshi

I want to apply a different format to the Table of Contents for instance
having the same being presented in italic or other font, but whenever I
update the TOC the format is lost and actual text appears.

How to refrain the word from doing the same?

When you refresh the TOC any and all manual formatting will be lost, that is
by design.
For basic formatting changes that will remain after refresh, modify the
TOC1, TOC2, TOC3, etc., styles, to your requirements. If you are after, say,
a particular word in a heading to be different, I am not sure if this can be
achieved.
Please refer to the following article which has a raft of helpful tips about
customising the TOC.

Hope this helps

You need to modify the TOC styles, but how to do that depends on the version
of Word you're using.

If you're still using Office 2003, open the Styles and Formatting task pane
(Format - Styles and Formatting will open it). Unfortunately, the TOC styles
don't appear in the list of styles, so you need to sneak your way in. Place
your cursor in the TOC at the first level you want to change. Using the arrow
keys, move your cursor one space at a time until TOC 1 (or TOC 2, or
whatever) appears in the top window. Right-click on the style name and select
Modify. Select whatever formatting changes you wish to apply and click OK.
Repeat for every level of the TOC you need to change.

If you're using Office 2007 or some other version of Word, please post back
with the version you're using and somebody who knows that version will tell
you how to modify the TOC styles.

I hope this helps.
