Having 2 pst files in Outlook 2007 on same computer

An IT guy told me i could have two PST files in one Outlook program. Using
Outlook 2007 not express.

is this possible .

i want to store older messages in a seperate pst file and be able to see it
and access it from my Outlook program by just clicking on the correct pst file

i will have one for 2006, 2007 and then 2008 - this way i have quick access
to my ems, have them sorted by date and keep my main pst file small for
backup and coping to external drives

is there any issues w doing this

i see the option file| new | outlook data file |
is this where to start

i understand i wil have to copy of backup both of these folder - as they
will appear as two different files on my hard drive correct?

You can have as many pst files as you have disk space....

ok - i created a new pst file - no problem

i then "moved" several folders out of my main pst file into the new pst
file. these folers had lots of ems and ems w large attachments too

my main pst file was 1,800,000 before the moves

the new pst now shows a size of 600,000

but, the original pst file is no smaller in size 1,800,000 - after all the
moves

i checked and the ems/folders are no longer in the main pst and i reset the
computer and went back into the explore program and the size of the main pst
folder is still the same. i also deleted the deleted ems in the delete
folder and deleted the junk ems in the junk folder - both had lots of ems but
again the size of the main pst file is the same

to back up pst i just copy the file to an external drive every couple of
days but now i am getting an I/O error and it will not finish the copy. i
know windows has this problem when trying to copy very large files.

Reported file size would not change until you compact the file.
