Have the CPU price drops made it to the end user???

E

eVe GiiDiiOn

I was not paying a lot of attention to the price of CPUs lately,
other then the fact of planning to build a new system. I want an AMD
X2 4.4 Ghz (+) and I was wondering if the price reductions I have
seen brandied about the inter have trickled down to the end user?

I have never had any luck upgrading a CPU on the MB in the past. By
the time I was ready to upgrade the CPU I wanted wouldn't work on the
MB or some other reason would make it impractical to upgrade only the
CPU. With this in mind should I get the new AM2 ( I think that is the
name) MB/Chip set that is out or is the x2 939 ok? I will probably
use the 4.4 Hz + and whatever MB I get initially for the life of the
system and do not plan on upgrading the CPU at a later date.

Also, can SATA and IDE HD's both work on the same system?
Besides the Power Supply and physical space, what limits the number of
Hard Drives a person can have in there system?

Please sages of this group, share the wealth of you knowledge with one
so undeserving as myself. And offer me any suggestions you deem wise.
And blessed be the flamers for they know not what they do.

We are a system builder. We have gotten the new pricing from
our suppliers. However, there is a shortage on some of the S939
X2s which has caused prices to be a little higher than the AM2 ones.

The AM2 platform is the new standard and S939 processors will be phased
out soon. It also uses DDR2 so DDR1 will be harder and more
expensive to buy n the future. The CPU prices are the same right now.

We don't recommend the X2 4400+ CPU. It does has 1MB cache per CPU core
compared to 512KB on others but most applications do not benefit from
it.
Also, can SATA and IDE HD's both work on the same system?

Yes, you can use both SATA and IDE PATA drives at the same
time.
Besides the Power Supply and physical space, what limits the number of
Hard Drives a person can have in there system?

Just the number of drives that the controller supports. Additional
controllers
can be added if necessary.

I think those are still pretty expensive.

Below is the one I have been looking at, but I haven't bought it and
won't because I just built a system that is good enough to last me
quite a few years.

It's not 4.4 ghz, but it's only US$153, and what are you doing that
calls for 4.4ghz? I suppose you are planning to upgrade to Vista, in
which case 4.4ghz will be barely enough, from what I've heard.
Also, can SATA and IDE HD's both work on the same system?

My (limited) experience with SATA is that it's problematic and not
worth it. It's the SCSI of the 00s. I use a small (40gb) IDE drive
to store my programs, with a bigger one for mass storage.

You're wrong.

Nope, the IDE of the 2006+s

Not a great idea to be buying new IDE drives today for a new system,
there are already some motherboards with just one IDE port now and
one of those would normally be used for the DVD burner.

SATA has much more future with hard drives.

There is no god, just an endless variety of crutches for pathetically inadequate 'minds'

I suppose you're right. But, I have used a couple of systems with
SATA drives, and they didn't seem any faster. And look at all the
SATA problems that get fielded in this group.

Bugger all really. And that's just because up till quite recently,
the motherboard and XP support hasnt been that well done.
You sound bitter.

You need to get those ears tested then.
That's too bad.

Nothing like as bad as mindlessly grovelling to some damned 'god' or other.

Indeed. That's why I don't like them. I'm not sure they have gotten
the implementation down even yet, but perhaps they have.

I feel the same way about dual video cards and certain other aspects
of the latest & greatest. I'm not agin it, but I'm agin spending
money on something that turns out to be too screwy for practical use.

But what if they're RIGHT? What if there is a hell? You will rue
these words if that is the case.

I'm thinking about converting to Islam on account of all the pussy in
their heaven. I figure I can run through my quota of virgins and then
go for sloppy seconds on everyone else's ex-virgins. I'm not proud.

But I won't do it if I have to blow myself up in a shopping mall to
qualify for pussy. I have certain standards.

They have. Particularly with an SP2 slipsteamed XP and decent modern
motherboards, you dont need to load SATA drivers manually now.

Dual head video cards work fine tho the config can
be a little counter intuitive in ATI's Catalyst etc.
But what if they're RIGHT?

They cant be. There as so many purported 'gods' with so
many utterly bizarre contradictions involved. Like that 'god'
that clearly just yawned as 10M or so of its 'chosen people'
were pumped up the crematoria chimnes relatively recently.
What if there is a hell?

That is so obviously a con job to get people to do what some silly
old farts have decided is the way they want to see people behave.

And they cant even manage to work out what that purported 'god'
wants to see done on stuff as basic as divorce etc either.

And I dont plan to grovel to some arsehole of a god that proclaims that
you'll go to hell if you dont hack the end off your kid's dick on day 8 either.
You will rue these words if that is the case.

Nope, not interested in spending eternity in some place stuffed with
rabid hypocrites thanks. No one I give a damn about will be there.

If you cant see that that is such an obvious con
job to get fools to volunteer as cannon fodder...

Thats the only way you qualify.

I had a friend who was fond of saying that he wasn't worried about going to
hell because he would be so busy shaking hands with all his friends that he
wouldn't even notice the heat.
