Has XP gone back in time? Auto Recovery to Auto Save - Any Ideas?

It seems like I've gone back in time. XP does not allow auto save & auto
recovery is very poor. Anybody got any ideas how auto save can be
re-introduced?

Autosave is an option of the applications that run in Windows - not Windows.
