--- has encountered a problem and needs to close

The above error message is driving me crazy.

I started using XP about 2 months ago. After the first 6 weeks, I started
getting that message on my internet browser Opera. The message tells you that
the program has encountered a problem and must close. This crashes whatever
you are doing. This happened 3 times (I installed 2 newer versions of Opera
just in case that had something to do with the problem).

Today I turned the machine on and during the boot the same message appeared
except for a different program. It was for Nero Backitup Scheduler
Application.

I don't use that application at all. Therefore it couldn't close because it
wasn't open. It also couldn't have a problem because it wasn't open.

This gets fishier all of the time.

The message wants to send a report to Microsoft.

I would like to hear from anybody else having this kind of problem.

Thanks.

Jack

First: allow the machine to send the error report to Microsoft. Not many
people realise that the error report is compared to a database, and if the
error is a common one, the report routine is directed to a knowledgebase
article. Somewhat more surprising is that the kb article has occasionally
been known to be relevant to the problem at hand. However, the chances are
that nothing comes back.

Have you looked at the Warning and Error Reports in the System and
Application logs in Event Viewer?

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in
the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No
Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in
a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click for further information. You can copy using copy
and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no further
information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.
