has anyone heard of this?

A couple of weeks or so ago, I had to restore my computer settings to a
previous date. Since that time, every time I print something, I get audio
telling me "Printing Started," "Printing Complete." This is driving me nuts
as I print out a lot of stuff. Does anyone know what has caused this to
start and how can I turn the audio off. Thanks so much for any help.

Well, I don't have a Lexmark printer ... rather have a Dell A940 All-In-One.
I have just tried 1) checking all connections and cables; 2) unstalling and
then reinstalling the printer driver for this printer; and 3) booted and
rebooted ad nausem. Nothing seems to work.

If anyone else has any ideas, they will be greatly appreciated.

I believe that the Dell A940 IS a Lexmark printer -- or at least some
A940s were Lexmarks. Perhaps you installed the Lexmark driver rather
than the Dell driver. This may have happened if you let Windows detect
the printer and pick the driver to install rather than explicitly
installing the driver first.

See this old (2003) thread on the Dell forum:

The Dell printer was made by Lexmark. This is the Lexmark software. Back
in the NT 4 days when Lexmark was getting their monitor software
(MarkVision) into the OS, I intentionally had a machine in the lab that
would talk to people. It also will say "Cover Open", "Toner Low" and "Paper
Low". You can even record your own sounds and replace them.

You can configure the software but you'd have to ask Dell or Lexmark on how
to do it now. I don't suppose you have teenage kids at home that figured
out how to configure this to annoy their parents. Anyway if you want to
completely remove the software, there is probably a downloadable package
that will remove all the stuff that the driver install performed. Try
dell.com first. I'd also look in Add/Remove Programs.

Thanks to Alan, Jerry, Gary, & Lem ... FINALLY after working on this thorny
problem all day long, I found the trigger to turn this off. I appreciate
your responses to my need.
