Harddrive installation?

S

Susanne

Hi!

I have a problem that is driving me crazy. It is a problem that returns all
the time. Almost everytime when I remove a harddrive and try to install
another harddrive in the same WORKING computer it doesn't work. I try a lot
of things like changing the harddrive cable, try another harddrive and
finally after a whole day the it works with the harddrive I first tried with
and with the SAME cable too. And I don't know why.

Now I am sitting here with a P4 2ghz and I try to install a harddrive 10 gb
as a boot drive. The installation of XP has stopped here: "Windows executive
reads..." and it doesn't go any further. I have MSI motherboard, 648f
series. Can someone tell me what I do wrong?

Thanks
Susanne

Check the RAM by running memtest.

Additionally if you have multiple RAM chips, you could try removing one
stick of RAM (as long as a minimum of 128 mb remains) and trying the XP
installation again).

this morning only that the second harddisk, the one i wanted to put
into a cpu with a tiny bit of 1.5 gb earlier is dual partitioned, 10 gb

Could you enumerate EACH step you attempt. Also, what XP are you using,
and more important, are you using a system-restore disk, an upgrade disk, or
a stand-alone(retail) disk? Lastly, exactly what do you set the
hd-jumper(s) to? s

Initial HD primary master, second harddisk secondary master, both
powered, on BIOS being asked to detect both hds, BIOS hangs.
Initial HD removed, BIOS hangs on WAIT at POST, loops forever.
second HD removed, system posts successfully.
Second HD made primary master, initial removed. system hangs, loop
forever on WAIT.
back to initial HD. free way!
Also, what XP are you using,
and more important, are you using a system-restore disk, an upgrade disk, or
a stand-alone(retail) disk?
Am not allowed to make any changes to the system, but the system has a
system commander at bootup, a win98, on the initial HD. Mine, the
second and rejected HD has XP and LInux.

Lastly, exactly what do you set the
hd-jumper(s) to? s
master, master. 1st IDE and 2nd IDE. mobo similar to mine, American
megatrends, only mine is 756 and this one is LMRT755,
thanks. i'll try the RAM change tomorow and see what will happen.

To format and install XP on a hard drive, go into bios(delete key usually)
and change your boot disk to the CD-Rom. Save and exit then press any key
when instructed to do so and XP will start loadong. You will then must
create a partition which XP will do automatically and then you must format
the drive using the NTFS file system. Do not do Quick format. During your
first reboot, you can change your boot disk from CD-Rom to the hard drive.

Hi again!

What does Quick format means?

Susanne

Do not do Quick format. During your first reboot, you can change your boot
disk from CD-Rom to the hard drive.

Its the fast way of formatting your hard drive but if there are any bad
sectors on the drive, they will not be marked as they would during a normal
format.
