I find it annoying that the harddrive make a lot of noise when Window Vista
was installed. I reinstalled XP MCE 2005 just to see if the harddrive is the
problem. After XP was installed the harddrive no longer make those annoying
high pitch sound.

Hi,

An operating system doesn't tell a hard drive how much noise to make.
Rather, in Vista the drive is probably quite active due to the initial
indexing and monitoring. This increased activity is causing the drive to
work harder than it has with XP, and the increased activity is moving the
heads around more than it is used to. This chattering should normally settle
after a few days, but if it's more of a high pitched whine then the drive
could be in the beginning stages of failure.
