Harddisk is not able to go into Sleep Mode

Hi All,

I have just installed a new harddisk to backup my data. This harddisk
is not for everyday usage, it is only been used when I trigger a
backup manually.

So, I wish to turn it off when I am not using it, because it is too
noisy.

I did that by setting the below:

Control Panel -> Power Options -> Turn Off Harddisk [30 min].

My Computer -> Properties -> System Restore -> D:\ [Turn offed]

Recycle Bin -> Properties -> D: -> [Do not move files into recycle
bin]

Antivirus, Anti spyware all off

The harddisk goes into sleepmode from time to time when there is no
activity. But unfortunately WinXP keeps on waking it up 10 or 20 mins
later :(

Tracing with FileMon, these are the activities performed by WinXP when
the drive is idle.

Buy two extension cables for the drive power plug. Route the extensions
outside the case, and unplug or replug before bootup.

anyone know the answer, or any suggestion? Thanks in advance.

I have a somewhat similar situation: viz dual booting, with Windows-XP
and Linux Mandriva 10.1 on separate physical disks. What I have done
is to go to Device Manager and "disable" ("Do not use this device")
the Linux disk. I suggest you try the same with your second disk, and
I think you should be able to "enable" it whenever you want to use it
for back-up, without having to restart the computer. However, not
being an expert, I am not sure whether the disk stops spinning if it
is "disabled".
As for the disk on which Windows-XP is installed, I have a feeling
that the "Turn Off Hard disks" option is a joke, because there seem to
be system processes that keep monitoring the hard disk, thereby not
allowing it to be turned off. I hope a more knowledgeable person in
this forum would comment on this.

Put the system to standby, then the operating system will be "asleep"
and won't try to monitor or perform maintenance activities on the drive.
