Hard driver activity light

J

John T Blair

I just to a new computer last Xmas. It's an eMachine
2.4GHZ Pentium processor.

I don't remember it doing this until reciently, but
after it boots, the drive activity light goes out.
But as I start using various applications, all of
a sudden the activity light comes on and stays on.

I've tried to find the application that might be
causing it, but when it happens, and I reboot and
then launch the app. it doesn't do it.

Anyone have any ideas how to stop this? Will this
hurt my HD? Will it shorten it's life?

TIA

John

Hi,

It may be the indexing service. Eventually, it will die down on it's own.
You can disable it on the properties of the drive in Windows Explorer if it
is bothersome or inhibits performance.

Thanks Rick. I'll try turning it off. That makes sense
as it seems to happen when I click on the "Folders"
button of Windows Explorer.

Speaking of Windows Explorer, I prefer the old 98
look of Windows Explorer. I've set things to the
"classic" look. But when I open Windows Explorer,
it always comes up in the single panel look. I
click on the Folders button. Then select details
in the view pull down menu. When I exit Windows
Explorer and reopen it, I have to go through it
all again. Is there a way to make this perminate?

TIA

John

Hi,

Change the shortcut properties. Right-click the shortcut to Windows
Explorer, choose properties. In the target line, use this:

%systemroot%\explorer.exe ,/e
