Hard Drive thrashing

I would like to understand why, now that I have upgraded to Vista
Ultimate from XP Professional, that my primary hard drive seems to be
thrashing all the time. It takes approximately 5 minutes from power
on before I can actually do anything, and my hard drive is thrashing
for at least 10 minutes. Nothing fancy here, 2.5gb RAM on an AMD 64
Processor @ 2.19 GHz; 32 bit OS. I am using AVAST virus protection as
it seemed to be the only thing available. Have a couple of 250gb USB
drives hanging around, but its my primary internal drive that is
thrashing. Any ideas?

For a number of days/weeks from installing vista things like SuperFetch and
search indexing run on boot up. SuperFetch speeds things up over time and
this is the main cause of hard drive trashing that I have noticed. Indexing
also causes this, but it shouldn't run all that often.
