Hard drive size reported incorrectly

I need to re-install Windows XP Pro to get a clean start again. I only have a
Windows XP upgrade CD-ROM so I had to first install Windows 98 SE. In order
to do so I had to convert my C: drive back to FAT32 (from NTSF). Now when I
format my C drive it only shows it as 8GB, whereas the bios shows it as 40GB.
I am aware of the FDISK problem in Windows 98 that has problems reporting the
correct size for drives larger than 64GB, but since this is only a 40GB drive
this should be no problem. Nonetheless I did use both the old and the new
versions of FDISK, but in both cases only 8GB ....... anybody have any ideas
what I am doing wrong?

Thanks.

1) All non-pirated versions of WinXP CD are bootable.
2) You may need to change your BIOS to boot from CD first.
3) Once you boot and start setup from the CD during set it will ask for a
qualifying upgrade product - simply take out the WinXP CD and insert your
qualifying product (i.e. Win95, 98, ME, NT, 2k CD) - setup will the request
the WinXP CD back - so take out your qualify product CD and reinsert the
WinXP CD - no need to install your qualifying product first, then upgrade -
note this would not even work had you had Win95, it can't be upgraded to
WinXP, although it's CD can be used as a qualifying upgrade product.
4) Also, during the white text and blue background portion of setup, you'll
be offered a chance to delete, create and format drives/partitions, although
WinXP is limited to a max partition size of 32GB for FAT32 file systems,
suggest using NTFS - it is more stable and self repairing (less likely to
get loss clusters due to power failure or accidentally shutdown).
5) This if the preferred method for using an upgrade and is called a "clean
install" using upgrade media - it also eliminates any of the previous OS's
gremlins that are usually caused by an upgrade on top of existing OS.

I guess you don't comprehend - I gave more than enough advice/direction to
get the OP going - this is a peer-to-peer newsgroup - others helping others,
so those in need can learn and not depend of those like me - so the next
time, they have the wisdom and knowledge to fix the problem themselves.
Then you have people like you, who thinks everyone in the world owes them
something, but I have news for you, if you or anyone else thinks I'll work
on your computer for free, then you are delusional and must be confused or
on some type of mind altering drugs (that's how some of us make a living and
$50 an hour is cheap compared to say what Dell, Best Buy or Circuit City
charges - and they even charge for advice whether they lift a finger or
not).

So.. I have to ask why you (the anonymous poster) did not post any
assistance?

For the OP - you can install the Upgrade CD for Windows XP as long as you
have your qualifying product CD.. Meaning a clean install using the Windows
XP Upgrade CD - no need to install another OS or use it's old tools.

Boot from your Windows XP CD..
Start the install and use its tools to format the drive(s)..
When it asks for the qualifying product media, put in your Windows 98 CD..
Continue with your XP install..

PLEASE - do not connect to the Internet until you have turned on your
firewall!!!

As I said, I've given the OP more than enough information to get going, but
the most important thing, is you "steelbottom" and "anonymous" are typical
"dirtbags", full of criticism and sarcasm, but have no words of "wisdom",
"help" or "encouragement" for the OP - and that is what's wrong with the
world today, people like you two who live a clueless misinformed life.

I like how clowns like yourself have big mouths and are
tough behind a keyboard , it kills me people like
yourself never have the guts to say things like what you
are saying to my face , just once i would love to hear it
in my face . Then i would show clowns like yourself what
its all about... Maybe but i doubt it that you would like
to settle this the old fashion way , Man to Man ???

We are still waiting on some or any information that can be of help for the
OP - or are sarcasm, insults and threats all you know?

Hey "steelbottom" - how's your day going now? Don't know what's got you all
uptight, but I can't help things ain't going the right way in your world.
We try to help people by pointing them in the right direction - no sense in
doing it for them, as they won't learn how to fend for themselves. But we
get tired of being attacked because we are trying to teach someone how to
work on their own computer(s). It would be the same as when you were in
school - if your mom, sister, brother, dad, aunt, uncle or cousin did your
long division for you, you would never have learned it yourself. It is the
same with computers, cars, baking, cooking or reading. All them same, it
will be a better world to work together and teach people how to do things,
instead of doing things for them. And yes, teaching people how to fix their
computer is an oxymoron for me as I make a living fixing them for people.
But in my community, we perform a lot of computer repairs, both
professionally and personally at no cost when the owner wants to learn,
helps and does the work, with us supervising.
