hard drive setup

On an older XP machine with a WD 160GB HD to boot from and a Seagate 250GB
for storage, I have removed the 250, so I can give the machine away and use
it as an external drive. I used the same ribbon cable (black connection at
end) and set it for auto select. That is the cable that came with the 250 GB
HD. When I turn on the machine I get a beep with no display. If it is the
wrong cable, how can I tell them apart? What would I ask for to get the
right cable? Any suggestions are appreciated!

Post is very confusing.

Am assuming the 250GB seagate is not in the system. The WD 160GB is the
only hard drive in the PC. The same ide ribbon cable is connected to the WD
as before. You did not alter anything but actually set the WD jumper (not
the ide ribbon cable) to cable select. The ribbon cable mentioned is
connnected to the primary ide port on the motherboard. You did not connect
anything else to the said ribbon cable.

Set the WD as master (alone) by either of the 3 methods. Remove the jumper
entirely, set the jumper to pins 3 and 5, set the jumper to pins 4 and 6.
The latter 2 methods are for jumper storage only, does nothing regarding
master w/slave or slave thing.

Put the jumper back to it's original position...

If the Seagate was slave (that's how I interpret the OP), the WD was
jumpered master w/slave. That won't work with the WD jumpered like that
alone on the ide ribbon cable.

If the drive in the machine was jumpered as master with slave present...
then the OP needs to jumper it simply as master.

At any rate setting it as CS did not do the trick.

It's hard for me to keep track of all the little differences each mfg has in
their jumpering schemes!@
