Hard Drive (Second) Mystery

I have two hard drives c: and f: (d: and e: are two CD/DVD drives). Regularly
when I boot up, clicking on 'My Computer' indicates that there is no drive F:
and I cannot access this drive. I have also checked via the Bios Setup if
there is a second drive and this shows that the system did not detect a
second drive. This problem is INTERMITTENT and does not happen with every
boot up. On three occassions, I was using Windows Media Player 10 playing
music files from drive c: and f:. Music stopped playing after some time,
(after having played files from both drives). WMP showed that it could not
access f: The drive name had also dissappeared from the list in 'My
Comptuter'. Is this a hardware or software problem?

Test the second drive with a diagnostic utility downloaded from the
drive mftr.'s website. You will make a bootable cd or floppy with the
file you download. Boot with the media you made (you may need to change
the boot order in the BIOS) and do a thorough test. If the drive fails
any hardware tests, replace it.

you do not state how old the second hard drive is or if it is makeing any
noise not normally heard. hard drive failure is rare but does happen, in
which case clone it quick and try reformatting the drive, but if the bearings
are failing its not looking good for the drive

the same controller ??
