Hard Drive Runs At Random Times

I installed Windows Xp Pro Sp2 on a new FAT32 Seagate 120 HD. I have Comcast
Mcafee Virus running and have turned Microsoft Auto Update and Firewall off.
On several occassions after not using the computer for a few hours, I have
come back to find my hard drive running (yellow light Blinking) for no
apparent reason. It will stop if I access a program. I do not have any
activities scheduled. Once I was able to open the task manager and noticed a
degfraxxxx process ending and then disappearing. Any help appreciated.

It may also runs system restore point when the computer is idle if set for
it.

To clarify: the defragging is optimizing the disk according to prefetch
listings. i.e., it's arranging the files/directories listed in the
prefetch area so that those files are not fragmented, resulting in
faster loading.

About every three days windows does an optimization that involves moving
files. Also it could be the indexing service running and/or system restore.

And the indexing service runs whenever there is no real work to do.
