Hard drive not recognized by firewire

I've installed a LaCie hard drive that is 1394 firewire. It does not show up
in My Computer. When I check the hardware in the Control Panel, it shows as
functioning properly. It also shows in Safely Remove Hardware as well. How
can I get it to show up in My Computer?

Has the hard drive in the Firewire enclosure been partitioned and
formatted? Check with Disk Management.

The hard drive came from my office. There are files on it that I will work
on from home. It was probably formated for a Mac at work and I'm using a PC
with Windows XP Professional. Do I still need to partition? I somewhat of a
novice in this.

The directory structure for a Macintosh is different from that for a
Windows machine. While a Macintosh machine will in all likelihood be
able to read and write a drive that was partitioned and formatted by
a Windows machine, the reverse does not happen without special software.

What do you want to do? Partitioning and formatting will wipe out all
the stuff that is currently in the LaCie hard drive.

Thanks. Naturally I can't reformat the drive and lose all the files. I'm
going to try to open in with my Mac and perhaps transfer the files to another
hard drive that is compatible with Windows.

The Mac wouldn't open all the files. Can you identify or recommend the
special software that would be needed to open the LaCie hard drive that was
formated on a Mac?

Holiday weekend in US and my Mac Guru is away. However, do a search on
Google for file convertors, Mac to PC and/or PC to Mac.

Did just that and found Mediafour 6 software that I downloaded and it worked!
Thanks for your help.
