Hard Drive constant access - any utilities to log activity to help find problem?

I have a fujitsu laptop (512meg RAM, Windows XP, 1.3 pentium M)
Often, the hard drive is constantly being accessed, which really slows
down my machine, destroys my battery life, and brings the fan to a
high speed. I do have alot of applications running in the background
and would like to find which ones are responsible for heavy loading on
the hard drive and when.
Is there a utility or Windows service log that could help me with
this? Thanks

Look at this tool from our friends at sysinternals.com:

Right click on a blank area of the task bar usually at the
bottom of the screen.
Select Task Manager in the pop-up.
Click on the Processes tab.
Click CPU at the top of the columns.
This will tell you which tasks are using the most CPU.
Now that you know which one is churning your system you
can take the right action.
If you click on the task name and then the End Task button
at the bottom of the screen it will end that task. This
is dangerous unless you know the task and consequences,
but use common sense.
