Hard drive almost stops

I have a machine with WinXP, all the latest updates, P4 3.0GHz, with a 650GB
Adaptec Hardware Raid 5 Array (3 500 gig SATA drives) as my hard drive.
Recently I've been having a probelm where the OS seems to slow to a crawl
for upwards to three minutes. For instance if I delete a bunch of files,
the progress bar stops at 10 seconds, for a long time, related to how many
files are being deleted. Other disk access operations frequently have
similar problems. The machine will do anything non-directly disk related,
like change pages on the browser, but the icons on my desktop stop midway
throught refreshing, and Windows Explorer is frozen for that time.

Is this possibly that I have a 600GB drive, with just over 100 GB free and
'default' cluster size, or has no one ever seen this before, and it's likly
that it's the Raid controller?

Any thoughts would be helpful.

I recently installed 2x 750 SATA's and that also slowed my computer, maybe not
as much as yours but there is a distinct delay of 3-5 seconds before I get the
full display on pressing My Computer

FYI: I removed Trend Micro PC-cillin and replaced it with ESET NOD32 and
solved the problem!
