Hard Disk Failure?

Jane Nepil

Hello, and thank you in advance for viewing.

I am working with a Dell Inspiron 4100 and during the
boot process I receive the BSOD stating that there is an
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME. I did a search for this and saw
that I should goto the recovery console and run chkdsk /r
from the command prompt after hitting "r" to repair a
Windows XP installation. When got to the command prompt
I ran chkdsk /r and recieved the error "autochk.exe could
not be located in either the startup directory or the
CDROM drive" I then did a "dir" on the C: and received
the error "An error occured during directory
enumeration". Is the HD done for on this thing??

Jane:

Download and execute Dell Diagnostics and run the hard disk routine.

or....

Go to the hard disk manufacturer's web site and download their diagnostic software
respective to your hard disk. At the test, you will know if the hard disk is bad or not..

Western Digital - Data LifeGuard Tools (DLGDiag)

Hitachi/IBM - Drive Fitness Test (DFT)

Hi,

Try changing to the CD drive, then run it from the I386 folder (does not
need to be expanded).

However, it sounds like the hard drive may be pooched. If you know who the
manufacturer is, you might want to download and run a drive diagnostic tool
to assess the state. Be careful, as some of the test will erase data.

I don't know if this test will work for your Inspiron or not, but it
can't hurt. Restart the computer and as it is restarting, press
Control-Alt-D. That is the letter "D", not DEL. This should start the
Dell hard drive diagnostic. If it doesn't, no big. You can get Dell
diagnostics from their site. If the diagnostic works, it should tell
you if the hard drive fails. Write down the error message and call Dell
tech support.
