Hard disk errors, upgrade help needed

Comfortably Numb

Hello,

When I boot my system, I sometimes get a message that some files are
corrupt and that I need to restore them by running a repair XP setup. I did
repair the XP installation and I still get the same problem. Sometimes,
when the system boots ok, I get I/O erors. My hard disk is dying and I need
to change it. The current drive is a SCSI drive. However, I am thinking
about buying a cheaper IDE drive. Instead of installing a fresh copy of XP,
I am thinking of making a copy of the entire hard disk and then repairing
the copy if needed. This way I can keep my settings and all.

I also think that I need to make some changes to boot.ini so the system is
able to boot from the IDE drive. Is this correct or I need to change
something in the registery?

Any advice on this? Any pointers on the web that I can follow?

Thank you for your time and help.

Just the basic facts.
Can you show me where it hurts?
