Hang up after 15 minutes of inactivity

S

Silvio Galli

My system - a Pentium 4, win XP Pro, SP2, hangs up systematically
after 15 minutes of inactivity. If I am using some application, it can
run for hours.

I know that it is the time for a complete system reinstallation, but
before doing that I would like to understand what is going on.

I launched taskmanager and waited to see what happens. After 15
minutes from the last activity, I hear a quick disk activity, I see an
instance of svchost coming up in the taskmanager and than the system
freezes, namely only the cursor moves on the screen, but the
applications do not respond and the system cannot be shut down with
the start button.

How can I locate the culprit? I would like to avoid it for the next
installation.

TIA,
Silvio Galli

Why what?

Why I want to understand or why I think I have to make a fresh
reinstall of my system?

Why you think you have to make a fresh reinstall of my system?

Reinstalling is not a good substitute for good housekeeping.

Why you think you have to make a fresh reinstall of my system?

Because my system hang up systematically every time I leave it
unattended for more than 15 minutes. And the only way to shut it down
is to power it off.

Many times after rebooting I find problems on the HD, luckily without
major problems until now.

In the past I made some update of the OS over itself after I
experienced other problems due to bad uninstall procedures.
I like to test a lot of software and when I uninstall them, they leave
a lot of debris.
So I imagine that my system is rotten beyond repair, but I would like
to identify the reason of this last problem.

I any case, I take your suggestion: let's do some housekeeping. How
can I identify the application that is causing it?

In the event log I don't see anything that happens at the precise
moment when the freeze occurs.
My anti virus (AVG free ver.7) is updated and running. Every couple of
days I run also Spybot, I use ZoneAlarm and Windows Update is running
regularly.

What do you suggest I should do?

I think your problem may be relating to Hibernation. Is Windows XP SP2
installed?

Are there any Error Reports in Event Viewer?

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer.
When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event
ID, Source
and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the
error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two
pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now start your
message
(email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This will paste the
info from the
Event Viewer Error Report complete with links into the message. Make
sure this is
the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer.

This freeware programme is excellent for getting information about your

posting small amounts of information into newsgroup messages longer
reports will irritate other newsgroup subscribers.

A variety of problems can arise returning from Hibernation so it would
be helpful to closely observe what happens when you run your test this
evening. Note that in the article on Advanced Power Management it
describes three stages of shutting resources. It would be helpful if we
can determine which the system is try to return from.

Can you also please let me know the make and model of your computer and
when purchased. Also what anti-virus programme and version you have
installed.

Is the regularly Shutdown or do you let it just go into Hibernation?

I have "Sospensione" as a tab avalibale in "Opzioni Risparmio Energia"
in my control panel. I think they correspond to Hibernation and it is
DISABLED. In the Advanced Tab I have selected "Shutdown" as the action
to do when the power button is pressed.
I think that Hibernation is not the cause of my problem. Even the
normal standby is set to be "Never" activate.
Can you also please let me know the make and model of your computer and

Ciao Silvio

In Start, Control Panel, Power Options ( Opzioni Di Alimentazione ) I

minutes ( Dopo 20 minuti )

Turn off hard disks ( Spenga i dischi rigidi ) Never ( Mai )

System Standby ( Standby Del Sistema ) Never ( Mai )

What entries do you have for Power Scheme Options?

Che entrate avete per le opzioni di schema di alimentazione?

Is your Windows XP Home Edition or Professional?

I do not have a "Sospensione" = Suspend tab here.

Before you try to restore your computer does the red light on the

What screensaver are you using? Start, Control Panel, Display and
Screensaver? Try changing for Windows XP and see if you notice any
difference.

What programmes do you have set to run continuously in background?

A HijackThis Log might be interesting to look at but they must not be
posted to this newsgroup.

Download, install and run HijackThis and post the HijackThis log to me

These two links are where I am starting from:
http://aumha.org/win5/kbestop.htm
http://snipurl.com/5uj0

From these one particular link needs checking out:
Error Message with RAM Problems or Damaged Virtual Memory Manager
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=810093&sd=RMVP

Checking memory is feasible but it does not mean that it is easily
eliminated. The problem is that you can detect defective memory but the
checking process does not always find defective memory. Try testing your
RAM memory

Memtest86 - Memory Diagnostic Page:
http://www.memtest86.com/

When did you last add new memory? Was it long before the problems, about
the time problems started or have you not added RAM memory? How many
sticks of memory are installed? If you have more than one memory stick,
one way to test is to swap sticks in and out of the machine and seeing
whether different combination highlight which stick causes a failure.
The problem is this might not work with an intermittent fault. It would
greatly help if you could let me have more information on your hardware.

This freeware programme is excellent for getting information about your
computer and might reveal incompatible memory.

The test a defective pagefile suggested in KB Article 810093 ( link
above ) is worth carrying out. See contents of link above starting at
Step 2.

The Event Viewer Report is the Blue Screen Stop Error dressed up in
different clothes. The memory dump is a symptom of the crash and little
can be gained from reading the contents, although Microsoft can analyse
the contents.

I am going to research the stop error further in Google. I know of other
reports of it's occurrence as I saw them recently when I researched a
similar problem in which this Stop Error featured.

Gerry,
first of all, I want to thank you for all the time you are spending
on my issue.
My isssue has become a BSOD issue. My system halts after 15 minutes
and when I realise that it freezes, I used to switch it off. I have
seen that if I leave it run for other 10 minutes, it displays a blue
screen an then reboots.
I didn't have the time to read the message, but it displayed an error
messge that was related to a driver issue.
It said also to try to disable shadowing in the BIOS if the problem
persisted.
Later, at Windows start up, I got a windows dialog box asking if I
want to sent an error notification to MS, what I did.
The MS web page informed me that it was a unidentified bad driver
problem, but MS is not able to indicate a solution.

Now, coming to your last suggestions:
Memtest86 - Memory Diagnostic Page:
http://www.memtest86.com/

I downloaded it and made the diskette, but the test halts during test
#3 and memtest does not respond. Do you know another program for
memory test?

When did you last add new memory? Was it long before the
problems, about

The memory was already there when I bought the system and at the

I suggest you Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should
help by allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click
on the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties, Advanced,
StartUp and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck box before
Automatically Restart.

Reboot the machine and enable Automatic Restart.

Did you get my message about emailing a copy of the System Event Log?

I have the Everest Report and have picked up on one thing which I am
investigating.

It would seem the driver causing the problem is identified, However,
what to next is not clear.

Everest is reporting it cannot check Adaptec. See the very end of the
Report.

Your suggestion to revert to the previous driver is worth trying first
because it is the easiest to do.

On the Adaptec web site I found references to ATA Raid 1210SA drivers .
I tried to connect 1210 to 1210SA but did not get a clear result. They
may
be what you need.
http://snipurl.com/k9q5

By the way there is another error in your Event Viewer System log. I
think this should go away when you re-enable automatic restart.

Hope this helps.

Gerry,

the driver aar1210.sys that is causing the problem IS the original one
that I have since the beginning, far before I am experiencing
problems.

I discovered that before the crash, an istance of defrag.exe is
running. Why it should run?
Something to do with "Enable Online Defrag" that I found in the
registry as a setting of many application, in particular Windows
Update?

Thanks, Silvio
