handshake

Still working on getting some old pc stuff set up for a church youth group,
using old donated stuff. Got past several hurdles, but am now stuck on a
printer problem.

OS is Win 98, PC is Compaq, printer is Cannon BJC 4000.

Eveything looks right, but it won't print. I removed several other printer
installs, and used the printer install wizard to setup the BJC 4000.
Although the BJC 4000 is the only printer installed, I also checked the "use
this printer as default" thing.

The printer will thrash around when turned on, but I get the blinking green
light, which, I think means no handshake. The carriage moves back and forth
when I turn it on.

Assumming there's only lack of handshake, please review with me what I can
check as to why no handshake, and what to do to get it.

Normally a blinking green light means there *is* data transfer.
You can do an internal test to see if the printer is working.
Power off, disconnect the interface cable.
Press and hold the on-line button, press and hold the power button. Keep both
buttons pressed until the printer beeps twice (beeps are about 3 seconds apart)
and release the buttons. If there is no test page printed the printer has a
problem.
If a test page prints then the problem is probably related to the driver
installation.

Thanks, Tony. I had forgotten about how to check the printer itself. I'll
do that tomorrow when I go back to the church.
