Halo 1, XP, video corruption & crash

Halo 1, XP SP3, Core 2 Duo 2.66, 4gb ram, Geforce 8800 GTS w/ Nov. 12th driver.

Installed Halo, no updates, and it worked perfectly for about a week of
on/off play at 1280x1024 with all bells and whistles.
Today I started the game but got a black screen with a jittery white
parallelogram in the upper left. The game was running, I could fire the
weapon. Whether I hit ESC or the Win key or C+A+D system would lock up for a
reboot.
I reinstalled but it only kinda runs, I get video errors that seem like
textures and lighting are mixed up, ie purple pixellated floors, ambient
light missing (near dark rooms), weapon fire is off, no flashes and no
explosions.
I reinstall again and patch to 1.07. Same problem. Reinstall DX 9c. Same
problem.

Any help will be appreciated, I only got about halfway through.

Sadly, yes. I looked up the command line options and ended up finishing the
game at 1024x768 with no bells and whistles.
So, the solution: short answer is to play Halo 2 instead.
