Group Policy and Folder Associations

Can I use Group Policy on our W2k3 DC to associate a file-type (.HEX) with
our device programming software package on all XP workstations (or all users)
in the domain?

Have you used the assoc command line built into Windows XP ? Create a
correct file association through the GUI with the application and then drop
to the command line and user assoc. This will show you the text version of
the file asscoiation, you may need to use the more command as there are a
loads. Once you have this you can create an entry in your logon script to
create the same association for example : assoc.hex =Txtfile associates hex
with notepad
