Groaning pains

My first home-built system (specs below) has taken to groaning. The cpu
fan emits a sorry sound when (I assume) it adjusts to moving core
temps. Kind of a sick, angry and in-heat cat sound. I'm wondering if
sudden failure is possible, but I just put the cpu (with stock fan)
together 6 months ago. Temps never move above 56 under streaming
conditions/high end gaming and usually hover around 35 in my radiator
heated bedroom. But the noise makes my butt clench and my mind wander
from whatever I'm reading.

Time for a new fan?

Sorry for the reference to my butt,

Yes, most likely. Did you buy the retail version of the CPU? If
so, then both it and the fan have a 3 year warranty. Try contacting
AMD for a replacement.

Maybe. You've checked the blades for dirt/lint which could throw it out of
balance of course? If the warranty thing doesn't work, you could try
lubricating it yourself: just peel back the label on the open spindle end,
and put some light grease or oil in it. The light grease you can buy at
model shops, La Belle, works best I think, with a touch of oil to wash it
into the bearing.

Are you sure it's the CPU fan? The more usual culprit is the chipset fan -
they turn at 6K-7Krpm and often don't last long.

In a word: YES!

Fans are cheap. The equipment that they protect is expensive.
