Grayed out Automatic Update settings

Hello;

After having upgaded my internet dial-up connection to DSL High Speed, I
noticed that my XP Home Edition (SP2) "Automatic Update" settings were
altered.

I also noticed that I can longer change my computer's "Automatic Update"
settings as they are all grayed out (they are now set to Automatic)...even
when I'm logged on as an Administrator.

According to "Automatic Update" help, If a computer is connected to a
network, network policy settings might prevent updates to "Automatic Update"
options.

Can anybody tell me how I can "technicaly confirm" whether the DSL High
Speed service and/or the network policy settings are the reason why I can no
longer update my "Automatic Update" settings? If the cause is not the DSL
High Speed service/network policy settings, how can I re-gain control of my
"Automatic Update" options?

By the way, I'm very good in keping my computer up to date with MS patches
and virus scanner software. I ran a virus scann and all is clean.

Thank you

Automatic Update settings grayed out is probably a Group Policy setting.

Hi Wesley;

I have not yet executed the file suggested yet.

I've looked and searched my registry entries and keys for "WindowsUpdate".
I cannot find...
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Group Policy
Objects\LocalUser\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Windows
Update\
DisableWindowsUpdateAccess

I do not have an entry of "Group Policy" under
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

Remember I'm running XP Home Edition SP2.

I missed the part about XP Home Edition.

Parts of this still applies...
APPLIES TO
• Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
• Microsoft Windows XP Professional

If you downloaded updaterestore.reg from Kelly's site, double click it and
answer YES to the popup.

To see what's in updaterestore.reg, right click it and select Edit.

Hi Wesley;

I troubleshooted a bit more. I tried running "Windows Update" as a test. I
never received an error messages.

I thus decided to do the following...

- I did an XP System Restore by returning to a recent checkpoint just prior
to the installation of my highspeed Internet connection.

- Manually configured my High speed connection (did not rely on my service
prividers CD)

All works well now! My "Automatic Updates" is not greyed out any more!

Thank you again anyway.

Robert,

Good for you.

Throw your ISP CD as far as you can, after you break it in half. ;-)
