Graphics won't show on website

Hi all - PPT 2002 XP - WinME

I am trying to create an Index page for my new personal website, and I have
tried to do this in both PPT and Word, saving the documents as a Webpage.
But, I have a Sunshine jpg that I use on the page, and when I save it as a
web page, and then upload it to my website, there is a red X in a box where
the graphics are supposed to be.

This is my first time with this, and I don't have any experience with doing
a webpage or website at all. What am I doing wrong?

I really appreciate any suggestions or information.

Jan :)

I would suggest that you use something other that Word or PowerPoint for
creating your web site.

When you insert your sunshine image. Do you link it, or Do you insert it? When
you check out your web page using your browser before you upload it to your
site, does the image appear?

I have 1stPage, but it is a bane to use. The associated Transfer program
for uploading is not very reliable or stable. As I will only need one or
two pages, I thought I could just create them in Word or PPT instead of
spending a few hundred dollars for a web program I most likely won't need
anytime soon again.

I insert the images into the page, and then create my text boxes. When I
check it before I upload it, the images are there and the text too. But,
once it is uploaded, the images don't show up, just the boxes with the red
X's where they are supposed to be.

Thank you very much for your time and help. I truly do appreciate it.

When you save as HTML (not MHTML) a separate folder is created that should
contain the image.

Jan;

If you linked to your images, instead of inserting them, they are not
transferred to the created folder when you publish to html (web page), and do
not get uploaded when you send your presentation to your website. This will
produce the red X your talking about when you try to view on line.

If you did insert your images, then make sure you upload them to your web sites
as Sonia suggested.

Yes..I am saving the web page as an HTML. 'K...now I see the folder, with

as a backup. But, when I try to upload the folder, it just opens, the
folder itself won't upload. Do I need to save it is some special way too?

Yes, I did insert the images, not link to them. So, I have to upload the
contents of the folder each one individually to the website, not the folder

where I get a bit confused. ;-)

What are you using to upload your files? Can you create a new folder on the
site, giving it the same name as Word used, and then upload the files to it?
The principles for links are the same here as for PowerPoint. The files
MUST be in the same path, otherwise the links will break.

Hard to say ... it'd depend on how your FTP program works.
If it won't let you upload a folder (and its contents) try creating a folder
(of exactly the same name ... exactly, even down to capitalization) on the web
server then upload the contents of the local folder to the new folder on the
web server.

'k...I've managed to get the folder created on the website exactly as it is
in the Word folder, and uploaded all the files into it. All the graphics
and such are showing now, on my end, but, I don't know if it will show ok to
other viewers. I have added the URLl to my new site and would truly
appreciate it if you would try it and let me now if all is ok from your

appreciated, as well as any others who would like to chime in. As you can

just a test to get the feel of things a bit.

So, at least I got that far. Whew!!

(I posted the URL to it in my last reply to Sonia. )

Also, how do I get the different fonts to stay like I want them? The
original font I chose was changed when I viewed it on the Web, and so I
tried to save a copy of the original font in PPT as Paste Special to use,
but, it would not let it stay in the font that I had in Word, it said it was

graphic font instead of a text box for special fonts?

Jan,
In general you can't force fonts in HTML like you can in other applications.
Each person will see the page as their system is set up to show it to them.
In fact, you can't even ensure that they will see the text in the colors you
define, since some people set up their browsers to force the use of some
colors over others.

That said, what I see for your page is a single page with yellow text
(Galleria-Normal) for the Welcome lines, brown Georgia for the main text and
yellow smaller Galleria-Normal for the word images. All of this is on a
white background. Unfortunately, since I don't have Galleria, I seem to be
seeing everything in Georgia. (What does Galleria look like anyway?
(Googled for a sample and couldn't find it...) If it is very important to
you that people see the text exactly as you want it, make it a graphic. But
know that screen readers won't be able to read the graphic, so put in alt
text for everything.(Bruce just took a peek using MSIE on his Mac and only
sees the rightmost two suns. He says you don't even want to know how bad it
looks in Safari...)

You might find it more worthwhile to create the page (and future pages) as
just notepad files that contain your HTML. I know that HTML can seem scary
at first, but there are some very good HTML basic tutorials available. Check
out one of them and see if you don't find it easier to build the page
yourself.

The smiling suns look very nice!

Fonts in HTML aren't so much fonts as suggestions, nudges in the direction you
want the browser to go. The browser will try to accommodate you if it can find
the font you want in the garbage dump....er... Fonts folder on the user's
system, but otherwise, it'll substitute.

Sound PPT-familiar? You bet.

If you have to use a special font (ie in a logo or the like) the best bet is to
convert the text to curves in Draw or similar OR to convert the graphic that
uses the text to a bitmap.

'k..I guess I'll have to convert the text into a graphic in PhotoPaint or
Draw, then bring it in to the webpage, as PPT seems not to want to let me
even do a paste special and hold the font there. I'll do a bit more
experimenting with this.

Galleria-Normal is sorta like Showboat, sorta, but, not quite so ornate. I
thought it looked kinda nice with the sunshine faces.

But
know that screen readers won't be able to read the graphic, so put in alt

I have one that I got from the 1stPage program, but, I am just not sure what
I should put where in what area. It does have a mock setup page, but, again,
if you don't know what goes where, then it's hard to figure out how to set
it up. It does not give you a diagram as to how it should look with what
where. Not very helpful really. I'll look on the web and see if I can find
one that is a bit more detailed. It may not take a village, but, sometimes
it takes a 2x4! ;-)
The smiling suns look very nice!

Thank you! :) And thank you for all your help, and Bruce too. Please let
him know I appreciate his time to check it out from other angles as well.

Glad to help. So's he... especially if it means he doesn't have to spend the
time on real stuff like figuring out why PowerPointAnswers suddenly went
missing this morning. (It's fixed now.)

I have a very weird attitude towards learning the web. I draft my pages
(formerly on paper, now in OneNote), then build a series of nested HTML
tables to make sure that everything translates to the right places on the
screen. I started out using very basic HTML, and grew as I needed to. I now
use a bizarre combination of FrontPage and hand coding to build the pages.

So, how does one go about learning HTML? By looking at what others do,
borrowing and adapting code and by reading on-line tutorials. We are doing a
severe case of thread drift here, but if you want to learn HTML, check out
these web resources:
- WebMonkey: http://hotwired.lycos.com/webmonkey/teachingtool/html.html
- HTML Goodies: http://www.htmlgoodies.com/primers/basics.html
There also used to be a tool on the web that let you see what the HTML
commands looked like when you used them. Unfortunately, I can't remember how
to find that site anymore.

'k....but, here is what is also somewhat confusing. Some people say you
should not use a bitmap in the webpage, that the viewing quality is not
always very good, so you should only the jpg. Another says you should use
only the gif. So, it makes it hard to tell which is the best format for the
best viewing clarity for most browsers. Especially, when I can only see
things from my own perspective. It's not going on the open internet, it is
just a personal site for me to post some things to share, but, I may also
want to post some things for here or the Corel ng's for references, and this
will mean several different types of browsers and systems may be used.
