Graphics problem...

P

PapaJon

I recently re-formatted my harddrive and re-installed
windows xp pro. I also re-installed all my original
drivers and software. I run a P4 2.4 with 1 gig of ram. I
have 5 monitors supported by two graphics cards from
nVidia. All is set up the same as before...

Now... when i have a few windows open.. my graphics is a
slight bit gittery and if i drag a window across the
screen(s).. it leaves a ghost trail... and then fills in
the image behind. Is there something i can reset or do to
fix this problem...

PS. After this problem occured... i downloaded current
drivers.

thnx PapaJon

If the images are slightly jittery, that is a sign that your monitors may
not be refreshing quickly enough.

For CRTs: Set the refresh rate for your video drivers to at least 75 Hz. You
may need to increase the refresh rate if the images are still slightly
jittery.

For LCDs: Refresh is generally not an issue with LCDs but make sure that you
are running the monitor at its native refresh rate. Check the monitor's
documentation.

Be sure that you are using up to date XP-compatible drivers for your video
card and monitor. Also be sure that Windows recognizes your monitors.

Unless your video cards have an enormous amount of RAM and very quick
RAMDACs, you will need to reduce the processing load born by your video
cards. One way to do this is not to display window contents while they are
being dragged: Right-click on the desktop and select Properties; then choose
the Appearance tab and click on the Effects button. Remove the checkmark
from 'Show window contents while dragging.'

OK... i reset the refresh rate on (4) crt's and (1 lcd)
to 75 htz... still have problem. This link shows an
example of the shadow left by moving my browser window to
another position... the shadow, in the lower right hand
corner, only lasts about a second.

Also... not able to get my Start >>>> Run >>> window to
come up... Should I re-install/repair Windows XP?

Thnx again

It occured to me that my previous decsription of what
happens may not have been accurate... rather
than "graphics being jittery" a better example would be
the following:

When you scroll down in your browser, or scroll your
Excel and/or Word window... there is slight hesitation.
Almost as if the CPU or Memory isn't able to cope with it.

OK... I just tried an experiment... I went into "My
Computer" and and changed the "Performance - Settings"
to "Adjust for best performance"... this solved the
problems. But man o man.. now everything is stark gray
and ugly. Question... Does this mean that something is
hogging my CPU all the sudden.. since my re-install????

When you reinstalled, the appearance options are turned on by default.
When you selected the performance option, the appearance options are all
turned off. You can turn on appearance options to provide what you want
to see without turning on the ones that slow the computer using the list
and checkboxes.

OTOH, did you defrag after the install? Remove unnecessary startup
apps?

Thanks for you input Q...

I did remove unnessesary apps in the startup.. but didn't
do a defrag... good idea... I will give it a try.

btw... still have the problem with not getting the "Run"
box/window to come up. Maybe the defrag will help...???

Thnx again,
