if you think you're going to be a full-time hard-core web developer sometime
in the future get Photoshop and learn it. if not, I've had very good luck
with photoImpact by www.ulead.com it's a very capable graphics program.
although the position I find myself in now makes me wish I hadn't spent all
the time I did on it and would have just learned Photoshop up front.
believe it or not I think learning photoImpact makes it harder to learn
Photoshop. You'll get used to objects and selections and find yourself
longing for their simplicity when you're looking at a 40 layer stack in
Photoshop. plus photoimpact is just more "windowsy" and less "mac-ish"
</IMHO>

You can use whatever graphic application your feel comfortable working with that can save images in
JPG or GIF format will work just fine.

I also like Corel but it's almost as hard to learn as Photoshop. Fireworks wasn't easy either. I stick with Photoshop unless I need to do something quick.

Ifranview's batch process is MUCH easier to use than Photoshop's.

fireworks....photoshop - whatever you want. Fireworks is a standalone
application.
I (still) use Image Composer (came with Frontpage 98).

I know you do, that's why I stuck it in there.
One of these days I'll dl the trial ver. and check it out.

Most graphics programs will do fine for web use. I still use Image Composer
for most everything I start, then slice and dice or optimize with PSP. It's
also possible to put video on the web without a camcorder-so it's not the
tool but what you can do with it that counts.

Thank you. :) You really should check it out. It does darned near
everything Photoshop does. It will not do CMYK output but for web work
that's not an issue. And considering PS sells for about $600 and PSE sells
for about $60, it becomes a no-brainer.

I've purposely not loaded photoimpact on my new machine to force myself to
get familiar with Photoshop. there's no question that PI is easier!
