GP with SUS

Frik

I am running a windows 2000 domain.I use gpedit.msc to
edit the GP on the client to allow automatic updates to
automatically download and install them on a schedule. When
i log in with admin right and i go to control panel and
automatic updates the settings for the automatic download
and install on schedule is selected but when i log in as a
normal user download updates automatically and notify me
is selected, WHy is this happening because its preventing
the clients from installing the updates? If i give the
normal user admin writes then the right option in
automatic updates is selected.Ive tried it with AD to
asign the GP to an OU and the same happens as the local GP
on the clients pc's.Help please.

The following link may help to double check that you set it up correctly via
Group Policy. This is a computer configuration setting, so be sure that the
computers you want this policy applied to is within the scope of influence of
the policy. If you still have problems, there is a newsgroup dedicated to SUS
where you may want to post - Microsoft.public.softwareupdatesvcs. --- Steve

Hi

i cannot find anything wrong with the settings. Ive been
to that url before and my setting are correct. It is asif
the windows update setting in GP will only apply to the
admin user or normal user with local admin rights. The
normal user does have read/execure, read rights on the gp
policy folder.

Do you mean the sysvol share on the domain controller? Users nead read/list/execute
permisions to that and the local Group Policy folder if you are using local Group
Policy. Does any Group Policy setting apply to regular users, you may want to try a
test setting to see if you can get one to work. --- Steve

I have Phoned MS and when the engineered answered the
phone he didnt know what SUS was and he put me on hold for
a few minutes and just said they do not suppport SUS. I
guess thats how microsoft is. Releases a OS with a hell of
a lot of security holes and when you use their product to
help you patch those holes and if you run into any
problems they just say we cant help you. No wonder Linux
will pass microsoft in the future.
