Got a weired IP 169.254.x.x

Hi:
I got a weired IP 169.254.x.x after I reconfigure my connection. Then
after reboot I got that new IP address, which is a private network address.
My situation is that my XP box is connectted to a NetGear Router and
after initial installation, everything is ok. XP is setup DHCP and got an IP
192.168.0.2. Because it seems my fiel/printer sharing is not installed
correctly, so I uninstlal/reinstall them. But after reboot, seems I am out
of luck.
Have done some research on the internet, said this is due to XP can't
connect to DHCP server. However, I really don't know why that happened. I
have tried to use different router port and network card, disabled the
Internet Firewall, power off/on the router and XP box. Still out of luck.
Does anyone have such kind of problem before? I would like to say thanks
ahead.

Best Regards
Kevin

Get the IPAs sorted out before trying to deal with F&P sharing, since
sharing requires valid IPAs.

Could be a bad cable; try swapping with a known good one. And, make
sure it is a standard cable, not a crossover cable.

Could be that your router has been set to give out only N-1 IPAs
and your XP PC happens to be the N-th PC; log onto your router
from another PC and check the DHCP params.

Since you have a router, you must have other PCs. If other PCs
can talk to the router (force release/renew on their IPAs to be
sure) but your XP PC cannot, you may have gotten some network
files corrupted in the XP PC. If all else fails, reinstall XP.

Thanks for the reply, Bob.
I have another Win2000 laptop connected to the router, it is OK. My TCPIP
seems corrupted. Before I made the change to my Local Network Connection,
this XP box is OK. I have tried to reset TCP/IP using "netsh int ip reset
resetlog.txt", which was told can refresh TCP/IP settting, but that is still
failed.
I think the cable is ok as in router, it detected a computer there.
I also tried to Repair this XP using XP boot CD, it recopied everything and
detect my hardware and setup everything, but it still failed.
Seems to me after I changed the TCP/IP, actually remove File/Printer
Sharing, remove Windows Client and try to reinstall, then I got this weired
problem.
Seems like some network file corrupted, but I really don't want to
reinstall - remove XP and reinstall it.
Another thing is that I have tried to run Internet Connection Warzard
serverl time with different options, seems that procedure corrupted my
network fiel.
Any suggestion to backup the original TCP/IP files without reinstallation?

Thx.

You can try XP's restore facility, to back up your XP to some time
before you began fiddling with the Local Network Connection. If that
doesn't help, then I'm out of suggestions.

Post it in the seperate mail in this group.
Have found that it is the McAfee virus scan and its firewall, which cause
this problem. You can't just remove firewall, you need to remove Mcafee
totally. That gives me the real IPA back.
Thanks.
