Going back to XP

so you have used an upgrade disc from XP to Vista Home Basic. Is there any
way you can then go into the add/remove panel of Vista and uninstall to go
back to XP like they did with some other earlier widows systems?

I am guessing the answer is no.

Andy.

Afraid not - that's why anyone with XP planning an upgrade should
spend a little for Acronis True Image Home 10. May never need to
revert back to XP but for ~$40 it's money well spent and you can
use it to image/backup Vista. May be especially handy for re-doing
the Upgrade to Vista which requires the "Original" OS to start from.

No. You would need to perform a complete "clean install"
of Windows XP.

Andy there is a Microsoft Knowledge solution titled "How to restore a
computer to a previous Windows installation after you install Windows
Vista." I copied it to my HD but neglected to get the KB number.

When Vista is installed it moves XP to a folder titled
"windows.old" -usually to the C drive. If it is present then you can follow
the instructions in the article to "go back" to XP.

Thanks, I must check that out. - If I am going down that route I definitely
want to make sure I can easily go back to xp easily if I don't get on with
Vista first of all. Takes me back to the days when I loaded XP and couldn't
stand it/couldn't get on with it and promptly went back to using Windows 98
for a while longer until XP had been out a lot longer :)

In your haste to ridicule, you're neglecting to pay attention. :)

The OP was talking about performing an 'upgrade'. If you perform an upgrade
and want to go back to XP, then you must perform a clean install of XP,
which is what was stated.

The procedure in the article allows you to go back to a previous OS, but
only if you install on a system that has a previous version of windows, you
do not format the hard drive, and you have performed a clean install with
Vista.
