Goddamn the ATI drivers!

This is incredible! So many problems with ATI drivers and MMC!

I'm working with computers for over 10 years now, but so many stupid
problems that occur when you work with ATI is beyond any imagination.

I have A7v333 + athlon 2600 + Radeon 9600 pro (vivo) + 1 gig ram + w2k
sp4 + dx 9.0b + Catalyst 4.1 + mmc 8.8.

I just recently went from Nvidia to Ati because a friend told me
Radeon 9600 pro is a good choice - I wanted to move on from Geforce 4
ti4200.

What a mistake!!

I basically never had problems with nvidia drivers, but I have
constant problems with Ati & MMC combination. I did everything as it
is supposed to be done and still I get Unable to start TV when I run
MMC - TV tuner! Not to mention "black screen" problems in C&C Zero
Hour game (it works perfectly on nvidia). BTW: the last time MMC
worked was version 8.6 and catalyst 3.7...

Why the hell can't Ati make a decent driver that you just install and
it works?? Instead of all this
"deinstall-reinstall-preinstall-install" bullshit? We all did it a
million times, ATI!!! Why does everything have to be so complicated?!
Ati's FAQ section sucks, they don't respond to e-mails, etc. Very
unprofessional!

At first occasion I'm changing my card back to nvidia! That's way to
much!

They do. After Cat 3.3 I've not had a problem personally.

Do you want help or do you just want to slag off Ati?

Have you used Det Destroyer to rid yourself of the nVidia drivers?

I have already installed my new Radeon 9600 Pro card but I didn't de-install
the Detonator drivers first. Can I run Detonator Destroyer now or will
remove my ATI drivers? Cheers.

Nah, use it, it should only destroy the detonators. If you have problems,
use cat uninstaller and reinstall the cats... no biggy.

It's OK if it removes everything. Just reinstall the ATI drivers. You
really been in computers for over 10 years?

Yes but your blind, deaf and dumb. That can be the only reason you can't see the
hundreds of posts in this newsgroup and the hundreds of websites dedicated to Ati
driver problems.

Been in computers almost 30 years (graduated in Comp Sci in '78). And the
Detonator removal software doesn't work - unless you have an nVidia card
installed. Smart ass.

Try going into the registry and erase all references to nvidia or whatever
they call it, just the major ones. Of course back up the registry files
first..
Then perform a registry/file cleaner. If you been in computers for 30yrs. I'
not going get specific, here. System mechanic is free for 30 day trial.

For being involved in computers for 30 years your ignorance is
surprising since you should have known to uninstall the drivers for
your previous video card.
Hell even my kid knew to uninstall his gforce3 when I bought him a
9800pro for xmas.

Do a search for "driver cleaner", it will get rid of everything then
install the cat 4.1 drivers.

Or do we need to fire up VNC and do it all for you mr. expert?

Looks over in the nvidia group....mmm enough problems there
to....looks over in the matrox group.... yup also there.

Tell me why do these groups exist...right to get help in case of
problems, thus is why there are allot of problems reported... it's in
reality just 5% of the users that really have such problems!

Probably even less. Among me and my friends we must be having around 10
or 12 Radeons, under Win9x, WinME, W2k and WinXP, and I haven't heard
any driver related problems reported from any of them over the past 12
months.

Myself, I've tried every driver since ~ 3.1 I think, and have never had
a problem. Earlier last year, I still deinstalled the old drivers and
then reinstalled, but since 3.3 I only just install the new ones without
bothering to deinstall the old ones, and it works like a charm.

Maybe some of these folks running into trouble have a somehow undefined
installation status. Like someone who's for example used Omega and then
returns to ATI originals, or when you've had drivers made by the maker
of the graphics card installed and then return to something different.

Drivers from different sources don't always install everything into the
same places, so when you install a driver from a graphics card maker and
then from ATI (or from Omega and then from ATI), the newer drivers may
not overwrite everything simply because the old stuff isn't where they'd
expect it.

Then, of course, there may be wrong references or entries in the
Registry, or files left that shouldn't be there - I don't know.

I remember when I installed original Nvidia drivers over the Asus ones
back with my GF4600, I noticed that Asus' drivers had installed stuff in
different locations from the Nvidia drivers, and I cleaned that out
manually. Maybe this also happens for some of the guys who had probs.

Then of course, there'll always be those who just have bad luck...

This sounds like where I was a couple days ago. After much installing,
uninstalling and the like. I found that if I uncheck "fast writes"
under the ati settings, suddenly everything is stable.

It's a shame it took about 24hours of messing around and reading the
net to come to this conclusion. :)

Actually, I didn't remove the original drivers before installing the ATI
drivers -- and my PC is working perfectly.

The original smart-ass told me to run the Detonator removal software when I
had made clear that I had already removed the nVidia card. However, I have
now removed the nVidia software using Control Panel.

Maybe your kids could give you lessons in manners?

Did I say I never had a problem? Did I say nobody else had any
problems? Try rereading the post, and keeping your insults to
yourself.

Like the OP I was posting MY EXPERIENCE (note where I said
PERSONALLY). And in my experience they do make drivers that I
can just install and have work for all my needs.

What I don't do is bitch and whine to no real purpose, life is
too short.

If you can't accept the fact that the 'hundreds' of websites and
post generated here actually only represent a fraction of the
ATI owning population, and that you will find the same if not a
greater numner of posts and websites for NVidia issues then
that's your problem not mine.

I'm not the original smartass. I'm a brand new one.

Physically removing the Nvidia card is a lot different than uninstalling the
Nvidia drivers. Even doing the latter with the add-remove software control
panel isn't enough to scrub the system and the registry clean of pesky
Nvidia files and settings.

That's why Detonator Destroyer exists. And it was good advice you were
offered, whether you liked his manners or not.

While we're speaking of manners. How about not swearing on a newsgroup? No
matter how frustrated you are.

Self I have tried from 3.8 to 3.10 ( omega ) and I must say..I see no
problems. Card runs nice, driver runs nice... things work nice.

I don't have a problem.. may be others do have...
