God I'm fed up!

I had an Acer laptop - it was stolen - it did most things fine - the main
problem with it was that I could not burn DVD's -
it was always hit and miss as to whether they'd have CRC errors or not -
even writing at the slowest speed in safe mode.

I was told that probably this was due to lack of memory - it had 256mb....

The (insurance) replacement was a higher spec machine with XP Pro instead of
XP Home and 512mb instead of 256mb.

However the new laptop had a CD-rw/DVD-r combo instead of a DVD-rw that the
original had - I had this upgraded (at the
insurers expense) to a DVD-rw with a proper Acer drive fitted by a local
(but non approved) computer shop.

After about a month of use my machine developed a problem that meant that it
could not play any media from any source -
audio (mp3/audio CD/wav etc) or video (mpg, avi, DVD) from any source
(CD/DVD, hard disk, Lacie external hard disk) without
jumping and stuttering.

I tried everything I could think of and eventually 'bit the bullet' and
decided to rebuild it - to find that the recovery CD
supplied would not work with the new drive.

So I took it to the aforementioned computer shop who rebuilt it.

All was hunky dory for about a month - but now I'm back in 'jumpy/stuttery
media mode' again without any real reason
(no new programs/no viruses/spyware/defragged etc) - AND - I've discovered
that it seems incapable of writing either a CD or
DVD reliably without CRC errors - even in safe mode at the lowest write
speeds.

I really feel like throwing the bloody thing out.

My questions are:

1. Should my machine be capable of writing clean CD/DVDs (why do laptop
makers sell machines with DVD-rws if you can
never actually write one with it!) - out of a dozen CD/DVDs written only 2
DVDs are clean.

2. Can I copy my old 'recovery' disc to my hard disc and write it with a new
bootstrap that will work with my DVD-rw - so at
least I can rebuild the machine myself (I've tried this - but see point 1).

3. What might be causing my machine to be unable to play media - it seems to
me that it must be a 'system' rather than a
'sound/graphics card' or drive problem as it's so universal.

I'm really pretty fed up with it all.

Any help you can give would be much appreciated - and feel free to ask any
questions that may be of use.

Would you use a VW bug to haul a mobile home ?
Just my opinion, but I don't see why anyone would consider a laptop capable of anything more intensive than web browsing, or some text work.

I've had trouble with a P4 3.2 ghz 1 gig ram writing DVD's. Or CD's. You need power to do multimedia. Something I don't think any laptop made today has. Though I did see a laptop with almost the same setup as my desktop. Had to ask the guy where the heat sink was. Mine is about 2" x 2" or more. Laptop isn't even 1" high.

That you did actually create a DVD's would tell you that it can be done. As for it gradually becoming useless, I'd guess that has more to do with addon's you pick up from the web. More things fighting for resources, worse the machine operates. I've actually used selective startup, and loaded nothing to the tray, or bare minimum just to do a DVD's. You can'thave ANYTHING turned on except the DVD's software for a good write EVERYtime. But lately I've found that Nero 6.6 doesn't seem to mind other things running.

Hi,
Do you have a virus program installed? Have you checked for spybots? Both
can affect your OS (operating system).
Try Spybot (free to use, just type Spybot into a google search) there is
also Adaware, another free spyware program. Also available is XP MS defender
(in Bata) from Microsoft, just do a search of downloads on the MS sight.
as far as virus apps AVG Free is pretty good vrus proitection, I always use
a backup program for sypware and virus. Also available is an on line vius
scan from Trendmicro.com. Scanning for these two issue might help with
deterioration of use on your laptop.

The media I used is a mixture of expensive (Sony) and cheap (Tescos) and
seemed to make no difference.

I've always burned at lowest speed.

I'm using NTI DVDMAKER GOLD version 7.

This jerky playback is not only from the cd/dvd but my hdd as well - in fact
the darned thing cannot perform any function that requires 'smooth'
processing - which leads me to suspect a 'system' level problem.....

Space considerations - and good experiences using a laptop at work led me to
decide on a laptop rather than a desktop.

I'm currently removing all the bits I've installed - I did always give them
time to 'bed in' after downloading and checked that they had not affected
playback!

I've just found a thread at Afterdawn.com hinting that the dvd-rw drive I
have (Liteon slimtype 803-ssw or somesuch) is a load of junk.

I will probablu give up and buy an external dvd-rw.

If you took the computer, just wiped/reinstalled from scratch, loaded
the DVD burning software, and it burns a DVD properly, before you load
your other apps, then it does work properly.

What you seem to be doing is loading a bunch of crap that runs in the
background all the time, this is causing your machine to run slowly or
to perform poorly.

2. Can I copy my old 'recovery' disc to my hard disc and write it with a new
bootstrap that will work with my DVD-rw - so at
least I can rebuild the machine myself (I've tried this - but see point 1).

You should build a clean machine, not use any OLD (meaning the other
computer) CD's/recovery process.

3. What might be causing my machine to be unable to play media - it seems to
me that it must be a 'system' rather than a
'sound/graphics card' or drive problem as it's so universal.

I'm really pretty fed up with it all.

The key is that it works until you've been using it for a month or more
- meaning that you keep installing things that slows it down. Stop
installing crap that runs all the time and you won't have the problem
you describe.

My laptop burns DVD-R, DVD+R, and DVD-RW while I'm also reading Usenet,
working in Visual Studio, editing web pages, and even doing work in
PhotoShop.

If you keep your computer clean/lean it will perform.

Space considerations - and good experiences using a laptop at work led me to
decide on a laptop rather than a desktop.

My machine has gone thru 2 power supplies. it ate the 1st one in less than an hour after I got it home. They stuck a 350 watt in. I added another 300 gig HD and power supply 2 went south.

It's now using a 500 watt supply. with fans in every direction, and bellsand whistles everywhere, and auto adjust based on load. It's never dropped to idle.
I would say this should have been more than enough power. But I still find times it's totally annoying with not enough power. And you want to do the same with a laptop. That's all I'm saying. It's not going to happen. Specially when you consider with all the power I've provided thisthing that I need to burn with nothing else running.
This P4 is a hyper threading dual processor.
And I also have turned down the burning speed from max - auto to 2x. I'd say you're lucky if you can burn anything from a laptop.

are minimum!

2 questions above.
1 I would say that you got 2 clean writes your answer is yes they're capable of it.
2 they sell stuff to make money.
3 You have more patience than I, I bought a 50 pack of DVD-R's from the dealer. after the 3rd DVD write failed, I took the pack back went to target or Walmart and bought a selection of DVD +R DVD +RW DVD -RW until I found that ONLY DVD +R's and CD-R's will work. You can probably get theinfo on what type media works with your drive from the web at the drive manufacturers web site.
Or just read the manual.

No idea here, I've turned my 'system restore' off on all drives. Never used it with win98, it's given me nothing but trouble when using it. It takes up valuable drive real estate. Finally think I have things configured right and only took 8 years. I've switched to using an image file that is auto created/updated weekly. Probably takes less space than 'system restore' also.

just repeating what I said previously. Sounds like you have things grabbing resources without your knowledge. I wouldn't think you need to burn in safe mode [too many drivers disabled]. But selective mode with startups turned off including virus software and anything else that auto runs.
Couldn't hurt to run a GOOD virus scan with several virus programs. Adaware, Hijack this, You also should have 2.5 times available free spaceto hold the working stuff on the HD. I'm panicking while it's running down to 40 gigs avail of 152 gigs.

I'd say just face it, a laptop is not a good choice for multimedia use.

Burning is "Safe Mode" may be part of your problem, as many functions
are not fully supported in Safe Mode.

If you were able to burn when the machine was initially returned, as you
seem to indicate, and now can't, then it's either an update or you have
to many background processes running - which often means malware or
other questionable items.

You also might want to do a better job at NOT installing crapware on the
machine. If you're burning files to CD or DVD you don't want to be
running P2P File Sharing apps (well, you don't want those at any

Another way of looking at things is Consumer Protection. I am not an
expert but in the UK it goes something like this.

It could be argued that if it worked OK once that it should continue to do
so for a reasonable period (?years).

If it doesn't do so there may be a "manufacturing fault". The first thing
to do is establish that the manufacturer is at fault which, with computers,
is a little difficult as it may be a software glitch.

Under consumer protection legislation goods have to be "fit for purpose"
(useable for the purpose stated or reasonably assumed at the time of
purchase and for a reasonable period (?years)) and "of merchantable quality"
(sellable). If it does not meet these criteria you are entitled to your
money back. The vendor may offer a repair but, if accepted you will still
have goods which may or may not work and the right to a refund is
jeopardised.

Under the Consumer Protection Act if the goods were purchased with a credit
card the credit card company is equally liable with the seller so you may
think of wheeling them in as additional clout.

I hope this helps but, to re-iterate I am not an expert.
