You may want to download and install Windows Live Mail, which will work
with Gmail:

Go to Tools, Accounts, select the Gmail account, Properties,
Servers, uncheck the box for "Log on using Secure Password Authentication."

I'm not sure if this recommendation worked for Nate or not, but the
suggestion helped me with a similar problem.

I was trying to access my POP account and somehow or another I wound up
enabling "Log on using Secure Password Authentication." (Having quite a bit
of problems with sbcglobal and ATT mail servers at the moment.)

Thanks Gary!

You're welcome, Ron.
Feel free to post your ATT/sbcglobal mail error message if you want me
to take a shot at it.

Gmail and windows trouble

I have done everything suggested here but when sending/receiving from windows
mail I get a window saying "log on to gmail" asking for username and
password.

I enter my gmail username and password but the wwindow keeps coming back and
no mail is sent or received.

Any ideas?

Remember to enable POP on the gmail site, also note the port numbers that
are required.
Next time you post, please include the complete error messages, if any?

Gmail and windows trouble

Thanks,

Pop is enabled on gmail and the port numbers on windows mail are correct.

When trying to send and receive from windows mail I continue to get the
"Windows Security" box "Logon to Gmail" that asks for username and password
which I presume are the same I use for my gmail account. I don't think it
should pop up but it does and even after I enter the user name and password
it comes right back again.

Gmail and windows trouble

Another error message that appears after trying to send/receive.

Account: 'Gmail', Server: 'pop.gmail.com', Protocol: POP3, Server Response:
'-ERR [AUTH] Username and password not accepted.', Port: 995, Secure(SSL):
Yes, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92

the error tells you that you are using incorrect Username and password
combo, use your full gmail address as the username, and ensure that you
observe any upper or lower case letters in the password.

If that fails, then try removing the account and rebuild it from scratch,
after closing and reopening WM.

If you are sure you are you are entering the correct username and
password, one possible cause for that error is account corruption.
One thing you should try as a quick fix is to delete that corrupted
mail account, restart Windows Mail, then recreate that account.

If that doesn't fix it, more drastic measures will have to be taken.
Which antivirus are you running?
As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus must be turned off,
although that may not be sufficient to eliminate all bad effects.
In a worst case scenario, your antivirus may need to be uninstalled.

If turning off the email scanning function does not resolve your problem,
consider upgrading to Windows Live Mail, because it is less prone to
suffering bad effects from overly aggressive antivirus programs.

Email scanning in any antivirus must be disabled, for reasons
explained here:
