The Gmail help site states that the ports should be...

POP - 995
SMTP - 465

Additionally... are you sure you have activated POP within Gmail?

I don't think you have the correct settings.

Gmail POP3 doesn't use port 110 and it requires an SSL connection so you
need to check the settings you have on the Advanced tab of the account
properties.

<from Gmail website>

Click the 'Advanced' tab.
Tick the box next to 'This server requires a secure connection (SSL)'
under 'Outgoing Mail (SMTP).'

Enter '465' in the 'Outgoing mail (SMTP):' field.

Tick the box next to 'This server requires a secure connection (SSL)'
under 'Incoming mail (POP3).' The port will change to 995.

*The order of 'Outgoing' and 'Incoming' mail server fields varies by
version. Make sure you enter the correct information in each field.
Click the 'Servers' tab, and tick the box next to 'My server requires
authentication.'
Click 'OK.

Hi
Thank you for trying to help. I changed all of the settings again and got
this message:
Account: 'pop.gmail.com', Server: 'pop.gmail.com', Protocol: POP3, Server
Response: '-ERR not supported m30pf3845295wag', Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes,
Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC18
I know the right ports are in there. it's just not working. :-(
Any more suggestions?

I know it shouldn't make any difference,
but the instructions do say to use
pop.googlemail.com as the POP server name.

Try that to eliminate that possibility
and the report back (either way)

Did you click 'Save Changes' after enabling POP in Gmail? To ensure that
Gmail can communicate with your mail client, be sure to click 'Save Changes'
on the 'Forwarding and POP' tab in your Gmail settings.

Hi Ron

Yes I did. I did everything as instructed. but no joy
:-(

In the options do you have "Log on using Secure Password Authentication"
checked? It should be unchecked.

The settings are the same no matter which program you use afaik.

Take a look and make sure that the password authentication isn't checked.

Aha! It's Vistas fault... please supply the evidence.

BTW didn't you say you had checked your settings repeatedly
and yet you still managed to overlook incorrect port settings?

You have already been directed to the Gmail settings
on the Gmail web site Settings/ POP and Forwarding.

Please download and try Thunderbird.

Hi Neil

It won't let me use windows mail because it is a hotmail address and windows
mail does not support it. So I went to the site, as directed by windows
mail, signed up for a new email address as directed only to find out that
that was a hotmail address too and same problem

I am very confused as to what to do next. Julian suggests trying
thunderbird, but I've used it at work and I hate it.

Sorry Julian this was in response to another person who said I could use it
with windows mail... but as it's a hotmail account it won't work either.

Jenn

ps I have used thunderbird before and don't like it so don't think I'll be
trying that.

Thanks for your help though.

So... are we talking about a Hotmail address or GMail? I don't
understand why you're talking about Hotmail now when the thread has been
about GMail.

Did you check the password authentication for your GMail settings?

Each to their own.

Gmail is NOT a hotmail address.

Remove your Gmail account from Windows Mail and start again
but this time follow the instructions.

NB it doesn't matter that the instructions are for Outlook.
