I cant get my gifs to display as thumbnails in explorer after a machine
rebuild. Also some other files while they are associated with the correct
program and sometimes shwo the correct icon often have the windows symbol
instead of an icon as if my machine does not know what they are.
I guess thats two queries. 1) gifs viewing
2) icons

It looks like you have some registry corruption....
The registry keys that contain association information are located in
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. Export the appropriate keys from a working machine and
import them into yours, you should be ok after that.
