Getting rid of unwanted install attempts

Hi,

This may have been answered a dozen times in the past, but if so, I missed
it. I have two win xp home machines. They came with the usual bundled pile
of stuff from compaq/hp, including demos of some MS office stuff. However, I
replaced two earlier computers which were dying and simply transferred the
two licensed and previously registered copies of office 2000 (full office in
one case and just word 2000 on the other computer) to the new computers. The
software works just fine for my needs. However, when I click on a .doc file,
the xp wants to install the 60 day demo of the later
office/word/excel/whatever. I can't seem to get by it. If I start word (or
excel on the one computer) from the start menu, the .doc (or .xls) still
tries to trigger an install, which at least doesn't shut down the word or
excel when I cancel the install. If I start word or excel from the start
menu and do an open for the file, then nothing annoying happens. I've
already tried re-pointing the file type option to the older working office
software. That didn't stop the problem. Anyone know how to kill the attempts
to install something I don't want/need and let me use my old software in
peace?

Thanks,

Chuck G.

I've read through your post twice and I don't see where you said that
you first uninstalled the demo before installing the Office 2k. If you
didn't uninstall the demo first, then uninstall all versions of Office,
including the demo. Then install your Office 2k.

Thanks Malke,

You are correct. I didn't uninstall the later version. I didn't realize so
much junk was on the computer until after I had installed the office 2K.
Then, I was probably distracted from checking it out sufficiently and
figured it was trying to install something that wasn't really there and
clicked on by it. It is apparently partially there since it shows up on the
add/delete program list for deletion. I'll uninstall both and re-install the
office 2K. I'm pretty annoyed that compaq/hp/ms put all that crap on these
machines. I just wanted the machine with the OS and that's it. I don't need
anything but the basic OS. I had to un-install their recommended (and
undesireable to me) and expensive virus checker when I tried to install
mine. So I should have realized they might have other stuff on there. I used
to build my own computers and just buy the OS. But now, the OS costs so much
you don't save anything and might as well get a pre-built pre-loaded
computer. But in my case, I might have saved some time and aggravation since
they pre-load a bunch of stuff that needs defeated.

Thanks again,

Chuck
