Getting rid of Logon Prompt problem

I

Ian Roberts

Hi

My brother has a logon problem...

As the only user on his PC he wanted to get rid of the user logon / password
prompt welcome screen.

I told him to type in control userpasswords2 in the run box and uncheck
""Users must enter a user name and password..."

All seemed OK.

But the next time he rebooted he says...

"I got the log in screen with Administrator and not my name in the dialogue
box. But I also got a windows screen with a red cross warning. Can't
remember what it said exactly but to the effect that there was no password
and to log in using my password.

So I ran the whole process again and put the cross back in it's box to log
in and then it reverted to administrator. After two more reboots it got back
to my name with the log in prompt!

So I'm back to square one."

Does anyone understand what's going on here and how he can remove this user
prompt screen.

Thanks for your time.

Have your brother perform the following.
Go to control panel.
Go to User Accounts.
Go to Change an Acount.
Select his account.
Click Change Password.
Enter the current password if prompted and leave the rest
of the screen blank.
Click Change Password.

If this is the only account this should resolve the issue.

When he set this up the focus was on the builtin account that is named
Administrator - instead of on his user name. Have him go back to "control
userpasswords2" Select his user name. Then make the other adjustments.

Did he click Apply and then tell it the username (and password if any)
that is to be used? It is not going to guess that for itself. Tell him
to logon using the Administrator icon, do it again, and this time get
the correct username and password in. He might do well to have the box
checked initially, highlight his account and click reset password,
making sure it is one he can remember
