Getting rid of dual boot!

D

Dean J Garrett

Hello,

I have a PC that had a dual boot: Win2K Pro and Win ME. When booted to Win2K
Pro, I upgraded to Win XP Pro and everything went well. I was hoping,
however, that the Win ME would go away, but it is still there. I'd like to
get rid of Win ME for good.

I notice that there are both

C:\windows and
C:\winnt

Which one has XP and which has ME? Which can I delete? How do I get rid of
the prompt at boot-up time which lets me select the OS? I've looked at the
boot.ini file, but I'm not sure what to delete.

THanks!!

Since you upgraded the Windows 2000 instance to Windows XP, then the c:\winnt is almost certainly your Windows XP folder, since that is the default name for Win2K and XP doesn't change it when upgrading. As far as editing boot.ini, if you still can't figure it out then best to copy and paste the current contents as a reply to this thread.

He wants to get rid of ME not XP, winnt is the XP partition
he wants to keep that.
to edit the boot.ini open it using notepad and delete the
line that refers to Windows.
save it, reboot, the only option you will have now is XP.

Hi,

Start/run cmd, then type PATH and hit <enter>. The statements should point
out where you WinXP installation is. As I suspect it is not C:\Windows, this
is likely the folder you will want to delete.

Start/run C:\boot.ini, copy/paste the contents into a reply.

Hello Dean

To get rid of the prompt to boot just open up run type "msconfig" hit enter
then click the boot.ini tab in the box you should see [operating systems]
with win2k and ME there, just delete the one you don't want.
