Getting hosts file working

T

Tim

Running Win2000 with all updates, IE6.

Under Tools, Internet Options, Connections, LAN settings, the box for
Bypass Proxy for Local Addresses is checked. And in my hosts file, I
am using 127.0.0.1 as a local address for web addresses I wish to
block. Yet they are still coming up (advertising, basically), being
displayed.

Is there a setting somewhere else I'm overlooking? Maybe a direct
Registry entry someone know about that I could edit? Is there another
setting besides 127.0.0.1 that could be used?

Is is possible that the proxy and port number setting (I'm in a
corporate LAN) for this network is set up to override the individual
setting for "bypass proxy for local addresses" on my PC?

Thanks in advance for any responses.

Verify that the first entry in the hosts file is:
127.0.0.1 localhost

If still no joy, I recommend trying the alternate approach of populating the
Restricted Zone with the unwanted addresses.

To make it even more effective add an existing and very comprehensive list of
sites using IE-SPYAD. They supply a pair of REG files to install and uninstall
this list. See this link for more info and download:

See this link for helpful info on this subject and info regarding settings for
both Restricted Sites and the Internet Zone:

Adding sites/servers to the Internet Explorer Restricted Zone

Note: I've found some of the recommended Internet Zone settings to be more a
little more restrictive than I prefer, so make note of which ones you change.

Hope this helps,
