Getting an x1950 AGP running on a KT400-based mobo

Ian Riches

I'm struggling and currently failing to get an x1950Pro running on a Via
KT400-based motherboard (an A7V8X). This is under WinXP SP3.

The combination runs an x800 XT PE fine with the Cat 7.2 drivers - but
although it will install any ATI driver seemingly OK, I end up with
either no D3D acceleration, no AGP capability, crashes in the SMARTGART
testing on re-boot, missing desktop icons or display stuck at
640x480x4-bit, or any combination of the above.

I've tried the latest 9.11 "legacy" drivers, Cat 7.2, Cat 7.12 and Omega
drivers based upon Cat 7.12.

:-(

Any suggestions of BIOS settings, driver version etc. to try to attempt
to get this combination running? I'm assured the card is a good'un, but
have no other machine to test it it.

PSU is an Enermax 400W, which runs the X800 XT PE fine, and that and the
1950Pro have very similar power requirements.

Thanks for any help.

I've done the same update.

I've had two 1950pro (HIS X1950 PRO IceQ 3 Turbo 512MB AGP). One was a
v1 and the other the v2 version. One would randomly crash never mind
what settings or driver was used. The other one worked rock stable (I
would have to look up whether v1 or v2 was the crashy one). In forum
discussions either a AGP-Bridge overheating or a memory problem was
discussed. I don't remember if the real issue was properly tracked
down but afair in every case the solution was to exchange the card.

You should be able to find details by using Google.

I've done the same update.

Just to avoid confusion: The above only refers to the GFX-update. My
MOBO was an ASUS P4G8X Deluxe.

You really should install this, then reinstall the drivers for your video
card. The Hyperion drivers have drivers that support the KT400 chipset and are
needed for proper AGP functioning.

Sorry...should have said, latest Hyperion drivers have been installed.

Tried again last night with no success. Tried to bypass SMARTGART by
installing the drivers via the directly from Windows rather than by
running the ATI .ese file. Got endless "Monitor signal out of range"
messages displayed on my TFT. Oh well.
