Getting an old DOS game to work?

T

Toller

I have an ancient DOS game I like, Masters of Orion.
I have it running on two WindowsXPHome desktops just fine.

I tried to load it on my new Toshiba laptop (also WindowsXPHome) and it says
it needs 1024k of expanded memory.
I have the properties set for expanded memory. In fact I have the
properties set exactly the same as the desktops. I looked in config.nt and
autoexec.nt and they are the same also.

Any clue as to why I might be having problems?

I know, upgrade to a new game. Well, MOO is idiotically simple, and I
haven't found a newer game that I could actually understand.

Solution: DOSBox 0.65 + D-Fend v2, a good DOS emulator combination for
old DOS applications and games, good and free.

It works, thanks.
It is really slow and only takes up part of the screen.
Any suggestion for improving the speed or screen size?

Your English is rather better than my Spanish!

I'd bet that the problem is with sound installation rather than memory.
Initially I saw the same memory error with orion.exe until I set
install.exe to a sound card the program would accept.

On a different note, I have sound effects but no music when running
directly from WinXP. To get music I must use DOSBox. How is sound set on
your systems that run MOO?

Toller, have a look at my thread in microsoft.public.windowsxp.games,
"trouble running a game", 8th July.

I ended up accidently solving it myself, so you *may* find your answer
there. Post back.

regards Tony.
