Getting 216.52.102.86 when ping anything

Harrison Midkiff

Hello:

A strange problem started to occur in my network. This has happened 3 times
now. Someone is trying to get to a web site. Yahoo for example. All of a
sudden they can not get to it. If I open a MS-DOS prompt and ping
www.yahoo.com I get the address "216.52.102.86". I will get this a reply
for anything I try and ping.

This is vey strange. Does anyone know what might be going on?

Dear Harrison,

Thank you for your posting.

According to your post, you keep getting response with 216.52.102.86 after
pinging any website.

If I have misunderstood your concern please don't hesitate to let me know.

1. If you have New.NET or NewdotNet programs installed, please remove them
all and then reboot computer to test the situation.

Note: This program enables individual computers to access the website names
and email addresses that are within the domain namespace that New.net has
launched, which may causes this problem.

2. If the problem still remains, prevent DNS Cache Pollution using steps
listed in the following article:

241352 How to Prevent DNS Cache Pollution
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=241352

Hope it help!

Sincerely,

Seaver Ren

Seaver:

Thanks for your reply.

I have checked all the machines that are having this problem and they do not
have the New.NET or NewdotNet program in there add remove programs. After
readying your attached TechNet article I decided to turn on the Cache
Pollution open on my Internet DNS servers. My internal ones already had
this options turned on. I assume it is due to they are running my Active
Directory.

Initially the problem seemed to clear up and then it popped back again
breifly. Do you have any other suggestions on this issue? Thanks again for
your help.

You might also verify that your clients arent set to use a
proxy server within IE...I dont know what effect this
would have on a ping, but it can cause issues for them
when they try to surf. I've seen the new.net add/update
the proxy settings in the past.
