Get rid of Logon Screen

D

Don

How do I get Windows XP Home/Professional to
automatically logon and fully load Windows like when I
first installed it? Each machine has only one user and
the logon screen stops Windows from fully loading until
you click on the user name. This is extremely annoying.
When I start the computer, I don't sit around waiting for
it. I want windows to fully load without any interaction.

Go to Start > Run and type: control userpasswords2 , and hit enter.

Greetings don,

Have you tried if you got any users in your XP system (Control Panel >
Users). I had a similar problem like yours since I downloaded the .NET
Framework from the Windows Update site. I later found out that a new user
was added to my users on Windows XP, I just deleted that user and bam
everything was working back again.

Thanks and best of luck!

Hi

Try this:

From Start>Run type in

control userpasswords2

then uncheck 'Users must enter a user name and password to use this
computer' and click 'Apply'. On the next screen - 'Automatically Log On' -
delete the name 'Administrator' from the User name box and enter your
account name and then the password in the next two boxes. OK your way out
and then reboot your system.

Or you can use Tweak UI:

You can download TweakUI from
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp and when
installed go to Programs>Powertoys for Windows XP>Tweak UI - then go to
Logon>Autologon.

The Start/Run 'control userpasswords2' uncheck 'Users
must enter a user name...' works like a gem, but I found
that I had to highlight the specific user that I wanted
to automatically logon. The first time I unchecked the
box I had 'Guest' highlighted. When I restarted, I was
logged on as Guest. I had to go back to 'control...',
recheck the box, highlight the user I wanted as auto-
logon and then uncheck the box again. It is working fine
now. Thank you to all who helped me.

Because of past screw-ups, I like to leave the Admin
account as-is. I can always go into it to fix problems. I
logon as a user with admin rights.
By doing as I discribed, I always logon as the specified
user that I want. It is working good now.
Thanks.

It can't be deleted, only disabled. That said, you will need ASP.NET sooner
than you think

1. Go to Start/Run and type in: control userpasswords2 and press ok.

2. On the Users tab, left click your user name then, clear the Users Must
Enter A User Name And Password To Use This Computer check box and then click
OK.

3. In the Automatically Log On dialog box that appears, type the user name
and password for the account you want to be logged on each time you start
your computer.

Tip:

Add Control UserPasswords2 to the Control Panel (Line 1)

Two stages. You can have it show the Welcome screen, and then proceed
to logon the sole user (if that account has no password); or you can
arrange for it to auto-logon and bypass the Welcome altogether.

Use TweakUI - one of the XP Powertoys from (if you have installed XP
SP1)
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

If you have not installed SP1, the earlier version can be found at
http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

Once installed you will find it in Start - All Programs - Powertoys for
Windows XP

First on the Logon page make sure that only *your* account is checked as
'Show xxxx on Welcome screen'. In particular uncheck 'Show ASPNET. . .'

Then for the full auto-logon take the Logon - Autologon page, check the
box and provide the username and set password to be used
