i bough a Gateway Solo 1400 notebook from a friend of mine. He purchased it
direct from Gateway a few years ago. I have the OEM restore cd, all the
proper documentation etc. I had to replace the harddrive as the original
which was a 10 gig drive had failed. I replaced it with a Seagate 60 gig.
I installed the original software again, the pc did activate properly. I
went to Windows update to download updates and it failed the Genuine
Validation so i caould not download updates. After 30 minutes of remote
assistance with Gateway i was told to Contact Microsoft, that they had a fix
for the problem as it was just a change in original hardware with the
notebook. I tried to contact Microsoft but my product id is not eligible for
support...This is the originalOEM cd that came with the pc, bios has not
changed, jsut the hdd. All is legal software and verified by Gateway, yet
they pawned me off on Microsoft for help and i cant even get help there. Can
someone give me an inkling of what to do now?
