Two days ago MS notified of Genuine Advantage update for my PC. A month ago I
downloaded Gen Adv & my Win XP is legal. Lastr month Gen Adv resulted in
suffering & wasted time setting changes to my internet dialer that had to be
reset. Why am I getting another Gen Adv update?

This user has now turned off MS update notice. But MS put a red shield with
X on my task bar & a balloon appears on startup warning to take the update.
How do I get rid of the red shield & balloon message without taking worthless
MS updates?

MS is wasting my value time & costing me $. This PC is stickly business use.

If you continue to want updates then just install it. It only takes a minute
so I can't see how its costing you so much money.

Go to Control Panel and double click Security Center.
In the left hand column of Security Center, click on "Change
the way Security Center alerts me".
In the Alert Settings dialog, remove the check mark from the
box next to "Automatic Updates".
Click OK.
Close the Security Center.
This should stop the red shield from popping up.

Good luck

User ALREADY Turned Off automatic update notification from MSFT as indicated
in original message post. As stated prior: Now MSFT still bugs me to turn
update notice back on. Red shield with X on task bar & panel popup on PC
startup is desired to be eliminated.

Other replies indicated that they don't understand how Gen Adv is wasting my
time & costing me $. The first Gen Adv update changed my internet dialer
settings & effected IE6 settings. That took over an hour to reset. My only
use of this PC is business. Any time spent on curing MSFT update screwups
cost me $. User does not trust MSFT updates. Until I am told what is better
about the latest Gen Adv update, I cannot risk instal. The bottomline for
MSFT has always been, amoung many others, expecting users to find & report
sloppy software bugs by wasting user time to perform MSFT quality control for
them.

Yes, but did you turn off the Security Center's notification of Auto
Update being turned off?

Use Steps 1, 2, 5, & 6 on http://comsense.microscum.com/wscauoff.html

Of course. People don't understand that you didn't purchase an OS to
waste your valuable time, but to make your computing more efficient.

Of course. People don't understand that you didn't purchase an OS to
waste your valuable time, but to make your computing more efficient.
Of course people don't purchase an o/s with the idea that it will waste
their valuable time. This toy operating system from MickeyMouse comes
BUNDLED on most computers. The end-user has little choice in the matter. If
you want a Dell, Toshiba, Compaq or HP computer for example, you get this
toy operating system. No choice here. Part of the Windoze eXPerience is
wasting ones time. You waste your time everytime you need to defrag your
hard drive. You waste your time everytime you need to reboot to install an
update. You waste your time everytime you need to search out the latest
condom to protect this insecure o/s from crapware and malware. You waste
your time everytime it insists on calling home to check on whether its
legal or not. You waste your time everytime it needs to scan for viruses.
And you certainly waste your time when it finds one and you have to figure
out how to remove one. In short, this toy operating system is a waste of
time.

Even if you happen to be a smart computer user who after purchasing a new
computer decides to replace this toy operating system with a real operating
system (GNU/Linux), MickeyMouse leaves you with one final waste of time -
having to remove it before you can install a different o/s. Thankfully,
this last stab at time wasting is the last wasted time the smart computer
user will have to experience. :)

Actually, I recently bought a Dell poweredge server from Dell with no OS
on it and I had the choice. Once it was delivered, I installed Fedora
Core 5 on it. Doing so was not difficult or a problem, but they
certainly don't offer or suggest that you purchase hardware without an
installed OS. I had to call up Dell and ask if I could purchase the
machine without an OS before I even knew I had the choice.
