Generic host process for win32 services

G

Guest

Every time I turn off my computer I get the message "generic host process for
win32 services encountered a problem and had to close. The problem occurred
at (always the exact time I shut down the computer the night before)" I can
click on the "Close" box and the message goes away. I don't seem to have any
problem with what I want to do; However, I want to install the 2005 edition
of Norton Internet Security and I'm afraid it won't install because of this
message. Does anyone know if it will affect the installation of the NIS CD?

I have done several different lengthy scans for viruses, worms, etc. and
they all turn up nothing.

The only connection seems to be with the automatic Windows updates. The
message started to appear in early March right after a bunch of Windows
updates.

My brother E-mailed me with the same problem that you're having. He won't
send me any info. Maybe you will. ;-)

Doing a little research it seems this could be related to having Norton, an
HP printer or a virus. Some more info would help.

Event ID & the Event Source are very important. To find these, look in the
Event Viewer. Any errors on your machine are listed there. Depending on
how your logs are setup, these can go back a while. Every time you had a
popup on Generic Host Process for Win32 Services that EVENT will be in the
Event Viewer.

To open the Event Viewer...
Start | Run | Type: eventvwr | Click OK

Look under System first then Application. Ignore Application if you find
something under System.

For any Events that seem related to the problem...

Double click the event in the right hand pane | Click: the button below the
second arrow (looks like two pages) [[Copies the details of the event to the
Clipboard.]] | Paste into Notepad | Click:
For more information, see Help and Support Center at

I can't use the icon to send the info to you--nothing happens when I click on
it. I can tell you I've spent hours on this and yesterday, since the message
started showing up after the March round of Windows automatic updates, I
turned off the "Automatic Update" feature. this morning, no message! The
error message in Event Viewer from a previous day said Catergory (101); Event
ID 1002; Fault Bucket 61845815 Hanging application Task Panel exe.version
2004.0.129.0, hang module hungapp, version 0.0.0.0 hang address 0x00000000

I got rid of one message, but now, when I shut down my computer at night I
get a message that says something like "program closing may not save all
material" (I didn't copy down the exact message). I click on the "End Task"
or "End Now" block and the computer shuts down.

Since I have done numerous virus scans, I think you're right in thinking it
has something to do with Norton. I believe the automatic updates are somehow
conflicting with the Norton Firewall or anti virus protection.

I use Earthlink dialup service to connect to the internet and for my mail
client and, in my case, I also think this has something to do with the
current message I'm not getting when shutting down.

Computers are wonderful; however, they're not easy and certainly not for
sissies!! :)

Please let me know if you learn anything.

The Copy button in the Event Viewer copies the Event Properties to the
clipboard. It may appear to do nothing, *you* have to paste the contents
into a message. Right click and select Paste.

It is TaskPanl.exe, part of Earthlink's Task Panel. My advice is to dump
the program.

When I right click on the icon I just get "What's this". When I click on
that I get
"copies, etc." but it still does nothing.

I'm going to try to install the 2005 Norton Internet Security from the cd
and hope it works. I'll be out of luck if it doesn't since it says to
uninstall what I now have before installing the new one.

I can't find taskpanel.exe to dump it and, if I did dump it would I still
have the task panel that appears at the top of my screen. I need that to go
to the web and access my e mail.

You are clicking in the box under the word Description, which is not the
action needed. Look to the right of the word "Description. You will see
two pages on a button under Arrow Up and Arrow Down buttons. Click on
the Two Pages button and make the next action pasting the information
into the email you have started previously. You will not see anything to
know you can done it right until you paste.

Did you guys ever find a solution to this? We are experiencing a very
similar problem.

Occasionally, about one in every four reboots on our tablet pc running
Tablet XP SP2, we get an error box that pops up and says: "generic host
process for win32 services has encountered a problem and needs to close". It
then gives the option to either send or don’t send the issue to Microsoft.
Clicking on don’t send makes the box go away, windows continues to restart
normally and there are no problems after that. It appears that the issue is
actually occurring on the shutdown and not on the boot up because when the
error dialog pops up on the reboot, the time that it gives for the error is
from 1 or 2 minutes ago, right when the unit was shutting down. The only
thing that seems to make the issue go away is running MSCONFIG, clicking on
the services tab and disabling the “automatic updates†service. As long as
the reboot is done with the automatic updates service unchecked in msconfig,
the problem does not occur. Also, the problem does not occur until we
install the following updates:

KB886185

KB885836

KB890175

KB886903

KB887998

KB888302

KB887472

KB891781

KB888113

KB893066

KB890923

KB890859

Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1

KB885835

I don’t know which update is the culprit because they are all installed
together via OPK tools (we are an OEM). I do know that after they are all
installed, the error box starts showing up on restarts.

I don’t know which update is the culprit because they are all installed
together. I do know that after they are all installed, the error box starts
showing up on restarts.

Did you guys ever find a solution for this? We are experiencing a similar
issue on our Tablet product...
