Around 1/4/2004 9:39 AM, TS proclaimed for posterity:
Whenever I connect to my ISP, Generic Host for Win32
Services attempts to connect to the internet. Can anyone
tell me what this program (svchost.exe) is attemting to do?
I don't know if there is any downside to this (just a user here, not in
the know), but I have never noticed any detrimental effects from
blocking Generic Host from accessing the internet via Norton Internet
Security. Same goes for Microsoft Application Layer Gateway and
Microsoft Betriebssystem (whatever THAT is). As a matter of fact, the
only MS things I allow access for are IE, OE, Netstat, Ping, Ftp, MSN
Messenger, tracert, Outlook, ipconfig, nslookup, and telnet. So, that
is 11 entries out of 86 for Microsoft that I don't block, and my
internet connection works just peachy.
(Note: Please don't read the above as an MS bashing post just because I
use mozilla. I block -everything- unless I know darned well what its
for and also know I would use it online.)
